I've tried to name my guitars a couple of times but it always seemed forced/artificial. The only names that kind of stuck were "Big Dog" for my main Strat and "Bosendorfer" for a Guitar Research & Design Explorer that I used to have (because it sounded like a grand piano).
Here's "Big Dog":

Sorry to hijack the thread, but was Lucy actually played at the Concert For Bangladesh? It's been so long since I've seen the movie that I can't remember. I know George had it onstage as a backup guitar, but I only remember him playing the white Strat and Eric playing the Byrdland.

(Albert King had a "Lucy" too, the Flying V made for him by Dan Erlewine.

Sorry, that's a non sequitur/ sidetrack worthy of Chromeface)

I think I'll call my new (old) National "Polly" after the original polychrome paint job.

I just play mine. We don't mix socially. So, no I don't name my guitars.

For me the problem with naming instruments is that it makes them more like a family member. You aren't likely to sell or trade family members, and when you finally do let them go the name makes it sadder and more difficult. Here only very special instruments with which I connect on a spiritual level get named. The rest get numbered. Number 1 has a name which is engraved onto the neckplate. Don't cringe about the engraving because it doesn't matter since it is a parts Frankenbass anyway. It will never ever be sold as long as I have anything to say about it. It is probably worth about what the parts on it are worth which is not much. But to me it is priceless.

It is sort of like TV farmer Fred Ziffel's pig named Arnold. No way would Arnold ever find his way to the Ziffel smokehouse because he was family.

So I don't name every instrument I buy, especially ones I buy just to flip or suspect that I will flip when the dew burns off the lily.

I've never named a Jazz Bass because I never keep one for long at all. They have about a 3 to 6 month lifespan with me at most. Sort of like foster-children. When I buy a Jazz Bass now it is with the expectation of disenchantment and I just never get attached to them. I don't name modern era P-Basses either, not because I don't like them but because I know I'll probably flip them.

I'm way over-geared right now and the basses that I actually should sell I am more reluctant to sell because the dang things are named.

Here's an example of what I do.
I call my Mustang-"My Mustang"
I call my bass-"My bass"

I have more than one electric, so I distinguish which one by the name it had when I bought it.
Since I have only one bass, it's "My bass"
When I buy a fretless bass it will be "My Fretless" and "My bass" might still be "My bass" or it might be "My fretted bass" "My EB-3 copy" or something like that.

Of course if the context allows for it I might just say "My guitar"

Have I named my guitar?....................No , that would be plain silly , it's a bloody guitar, not a person, it doesn't have parents or kids!!!
