4:23 (but really you gotta watch from the start to see how it builds to this part)

Elvis: The King of Rock 'n Roll
MJ: The King of Pop
Mayer: The King of Tone

The tone instantly reminded me of the lead tone on this Paul Gilbert track starting at 0:22 (especially around the 1 minute mark).

Well golly gosh. How very ... ordinary.

Sorry but Mayer's music (and playing) does nothing for me. Predictable pentatonic drudgery and endless lyrics about luuuuuuuuurve, not very original at all. More FM-friendly, nice and safe unthreatening blues rock.

I remain unimpressed.

The sharp elbows from all the never-has-beens on this forum are hilarious.

I'm a never-will-be too, but I don't insult good musicians. The typical pattern here is I post something complimentary about a musician, some agree, and then some never-has-beens who we've never heard of anonymously insult the famous musician. Take your pick: Corgan, Cobain, Mayer, ROTM, Nirvana...even Hendrix.

I was pretty darn impressed by this John Mayer clip, but then I'm not that great of a guitar player so the "predictable pentatonic drudgery" mostly goes unnoticed.

Exactly predictable pentatonic drudgery. He's good just nothing special.

It makes sense to me that those of you who are skilled players would not be easily impressed. I'm simply not good enough to look at Mayer as "nothing special" even though I am not a huge fan of his either.

I'd go so far as to call him competent on guitar.

So you seem to think fame and being a good musician are one in the same. There are so many fantastic musicians that are not famous it ridiculous.

I'm not a fan, but I respect JM for what he's accomplished. I would say he's pretty good, if a bit boring...at least to me. But I will admit I like his voice. I just think he needs different song writers. That voice could be really cool if he had the write songs. Or if I was a 16 year old girl, for instance. then I'm sure I'd think he was the best thing ever.

but, to each his own, you know? I love punk, but hate the clash. I hate country, but have a strange affinity for Dwight Yoakam. I'm a mess. I'm also convinced that the 8th track on any cd is the best, and if track 8 is not brilliant, your cd is trash. but that's probably just me. :)

The same people bashing JM often seem to like this guy for some reason, personally I can't tell the difference, except that JM doesn't look like he's going to work at a bank after the show.
