I just got a message from the seller of the Gibson B-25-12 that I just bought. She apparently tried to send it through the mail or UPS and it was too big for them to accept .She went to several places and the cheapest quote that she could get was from UDL and that was for $397 which is more than the cost of the guitar. I'm in a real quandary here because my buddy Blinkers has guitars shipped from Japan for less that 1/3 that.I suggested that she contact Guitar Center or Musician's Friend to se if they could offer any suggestions.Anyone got any solutions or suggestions? It would be immensely appreciated if anyone could help me get that baby to her new home.BTW she is in Colorado.

I'm sure someone will have a better idea, but you can
try to estimate through USPS with this link:

Thanks Mike-that's a great help and from what I can figure I may be able to get away with about $40.Anyway I'll send her the link and keep a heads up for other suggestions just in case I bungled the form I filled out.

Have you considered sawing it into 6 inch lengths and sending them individually?

UPS routinely provides that service for free.

My very heavy National was shipped in the case, in a big box to Australia for $150 - USPS Priority International mail. I hope you can do better than that being neighbors and all.

$40-$50 sounds about right. If she declares the selling price as value and not the book price, it could be a bit lower too. I'd try and work with her and give her suggestions. Good luck, D!

I recently sent a guitar to a buyer in Canada and it was a fiasco all the way. I wanted to go with UPS, but when I went into a UPS store to get it "professionally" packaged, they looked at me like I was crazy - said they didn't have boxes big enough to hold a guitar and they didn't personally package anything like a guitar, too easily broken and they didn't want the liability. What?

So I ended up going with FedEx, though they also wanted nothing to do with the packing. I went to GC and a buddy there gave me two guitar shipping boxes, one that would fit inside the other. I packed the daylights out of that guitar, put the first box inside the second and worked sheet foam into the crevices between the boxes - solid as a rock. When all was said and done, it cost me almost $90 to send the guitar to Canada.

To top it all off, the customs/import paperwork was also a total PITA! I won't do it again.

That's strange Guit.... I'm always having guitars come in the mail and have sent almost as many out.

The only thing that I can see is that she's using a box that is huge. I can't see why she can't ship FedEx. I've had no trouble with them and it's usually here in a few days. The quote she gave you is just a tad off the charts too....$90 tops to get that guitar here.

Email her back and get the dimensions of the box she's using.

And get the dimensions of the box she's putting the guitar into as well ....lol...

Derek,
Suggest your seller go to a Fedex office location for packing if she has no experience shipping guitars. They should be able to provide a carton and packing materials for the guitar. Best to ship in a case and a box. Get insurance for the package as well.
http://www.fedex.com/us/international/shipping-to-canada/index.html?INTCMP=BAL-1001179-7-1-962-0100000-US-US-EN-IGTTGRAPHIC0000-1-GDLN-EN-2
Follow this link for the particulars. FedEx Ground is 5 to 7 days as long as the paperwork is right. Disclaimer: I am a FedEx Ground employee and I handle international shipments to Canada and Mexico on a regular basis. She will need to create a proforma invoice on the declared value and a certificate of origination or exemption for the product. All of this info is available on the website. Hopefully you will get your guitar soon.

USPS has size and weight limitations. Something to remember for next time. I think their site has info on the exact details. I try to avoid cross border shipping whenever possible. American pricing seems lower initially but by the time you get the item in your hands you don't save anything. My rule of thumb is if it's available in Canada buy it in Canada.

Well folks,it seems that the lady that was selling the guitar was trying to just milk extra money from me,after I had told her what the shipping charges should be after talking to dealers and collectors and sending her a link to USPS international weight and measurement limits she never replied to any of my emails.I contacted Customer Relations at Reverb.com and they agreed that there was something not quite right going on and agreed that I should just drop the issue, they even offered to get in contact with PayPal and tell them to freeze the money in my account and not to forward it to her. I then bid on a very nice Johnson Las Vegas jazz box, figuring that a nice pair of Vineham or Lollar PAFs,some CTS pots and Orange Caps would really turn it into a great guitar, but unfortunately it had just been sold.Anyway I am picking up a TC Electronics NM-1 Nova Modulator for a great price later on today so it's not all bad.The NM-1 is a multi-function modulation pedal with tremolo, vibrato, chorus etc. I watched some demos on Youtube and was very impressed by the sound,it's my kind of pedal.
