Her Wanna;

You've pretty much summed it all up in a nutshell; I simply don't have the discipline to actually play the guitar, I just like to beat the $@!& out of it with simple chords. Which I suppose, is fine.
I've just gotta find that energy inside me to allow me to have fun with it. And I spose I did this arvo. I tried learning at the drive in's, 'arcarsenal'. It sounded nothing like it was intended, but I probably haven't felt that good after I played in a while. Mind you, the songs pretty hard, for me anyway, so there's that challenge aspect that's in that song.

We've all been there at some point -- usually early on but periodically later in a career.

Many have offered some great tips to get you back on track and I would echo Tim's advice......

Riley you need to take lessons. You will learn new thing and that in its self will motivate you. In my opinion the music you are playing does not challenge you therefore you get bored to easy. Try something outside of your norm you might surprise yourself. And yes find someone to play with preferably someone better than you. It will make you a better player

Rawk on!

Hi Riley,did you ever consider trying to become proficient on another instrument such as keys,harp (harmonica harp that is)unless you try autoharp? Drums would probably be good for you because keeping a beat in time with the music will also help you to get the right rhythm in your strumming after a while,of course with drums your parents will have to be in agreement...or deaf...lol.Any other stringed instrument such as ukulele, mandolin, mandolin or even violin could help break up any feelings of monotony that you may experience with guitar from time to time but at least you'll be devoting the same amount of time to music.

Yeah bro, I'm with you. Will I take it to the next level or not? I'm not going to give up. Also like some have said: just embrace the fun of it. I like to make noise. It was enough for Kurt. I've gotten to where I can mess around and luck into some solos that sound Kurtlike--mean and nasty. The other night I was feeling down and I used my electric guitar to rock out a little bit. Just like Yo Yo Ma talks to Mr Rogers about on that one class episode.

But then I see this kind of stuff

I'd be proud of myself if I learned this song ON ELECTRIC WITHOUT SINGING AT THE SAME TIME.

Look, she even did one for you baby boomers who like "The Rolling Stones" lzozlzozllolozzz

Dude, I've got it!!!

Check out this famous quote:

Peter Drucker, in his famous essay Managing Oneself, advised strongly the need to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and observed that you can never win by improving your weaknesses, only by improving your strengths. That is a fascinating thought.

I'd say that's what Kurt did. Think real hard on this. Do what you love? Bang out the power chord songs and learn to nasty solo like Kurt did. Worked for Kurt.

I need a new motivation to keep pushing my guitar playing. Like, seriously, for the past 2 years I've only been bothering to learn songs that I can look at the tab for litterally 3 minutes and then I'm done. And even then, it's not much. Most of the time when I'm playing I'm just either making up riffs and bunching them together and calling it a song, or improvising with incredibly loud sound.
It's really strange cause alot of incredible stuff's been happening for me for most of the year, and you'd think that'd motivate me, but it doesn't.

EDIT;

Furthermore, I've been learning songs like powderfinger 'these days', but it's not a challenge. I just looked at the chords, and I could play it. I need a new challenge, but I'm not motivated to take whatever challenge may come, if that makes sense. So I need motivation, to get motivated.
My playing will always be limited by a right-hand problem, but surely there's always something that I can do to expand my playing, right?

So, what do you think I should do? I guess I'm incredibly lazy, when it comes to everything. I need someone or something to give me that extra push.

Hi Riley, good to see your post. In the words of the late great Frank Zappa - "shut up 'n play yer guitar" :lol:

If you can't find a band then start a band.

Local music store ads, classifieds, word of mouth, schools, etc.

like Mike said.

you said you were tired of just playing in your room. so get out there.

try busking. I did that when I was younger, it did wonders for my playing.

Hi Riley,

Some great ieas on here. But the bottom line is everyone is different, and some people go along in fits and starts, even some of the "great" players proceed like that. There's nothing wrong with having a bit of a break from it, and as you've said you've had some other stuff going on for a while and for the majority of people playing guitar isn't the most important thing in life sometimes it has to take a back seat.

A couple of things that may help you to jump start your interest in guitar may be to start trying to write your own music, make up your own tunes you may find that that is where your real talent and motivation lies. And a suggestion that may help you to review your playing and indicate opportunities for development and improvement my be to record yourself playing and listen back to it, then rerecord and try to do it better see which particular things you're not so good at and try to improve on them. One simple thing to do with a recorder is to stum a few chords in sequence try to play in time, then try to double track the strumming and you'll see just how much effort has to go into strumming in time, it's a simple exersise but will make you think and may encourage you to do a bit of practice with a metronome.

Good luck and enjoy.

I do write my own music. I do record it. An it comes out as total sh1t.

No wonder. You said yourself - you're a power chord specialist with no discipline. If you've been playing 4 years and no done anything structured, you've probably missed out on a lot of stuff you should know, that would have helped you go beyond where you are now.

Four years is still barely a start. I'm 18 months in and only realising how much there is to learn just to be proficient. Power chords are fine for running off Nirvana and Clash rhythm playing, but that's gets old really soon, even if you're doing it with mates for fun. And you're not doing that either.

Start over, if you want to progress. Find a good online course (not You Tube, "How to play X song" tutes) or a good teacher. Having a lesson to turn up and pay for enforces discipline where you have none, if nothing else.

If you don't want to do anything like that, then it's really just a whinge thread.

Riley, playing lead is a blast, so consider forgetting about chords and riffs for a while and working on your lead chops instead. There are a lot of good lessons for learning licks on YT. Just take it slowly, one lick at a time until you can nail it, and slowly build up an arsenal.

I'm taking notes on some of this advice myself. We could all use a refresh button sometimes. :) When I hit a bad slump a couple of years ago I took best buy up on their offer of a free lesson (free with my guitar purchase) - it actually did help get me moving again, not that I'm any better than where you're at, I've got most of the same thoughts about my own playing... but that lesson - I told the guy to act like I was just some 10 year old kid who wanted to learn guitar, because that's what I needed. I'd built my house without a foundation, I'd been shown how to read tabs and then kinda half-assed learned about 20 intros... and noodled around a lot. and never really "got it" (still don't, really) but - he showed me some basics and a few little scales. SCALES! That's my advice. IF nothing else, go look up some scales , learn em. play em forward and backward until you can play it without looking. and then play em some more. Something might click. it did for me. Cheers, Riley.
