I have learned a few songs by tab but I end up learning them by rote.
Do you find learning by tab not really learning at all if you don't understand the why?

Nah, TAB is valid, though you shouldn't neglect the regular staff music. Learn to read music as well is what I'm saying.

I use tablature quite often as a starting point to learning a song. But most of the time I listen to the song over and over or watch the artist playing it on a DVD to see their hand position and where they are playing it on the neck.

Alot of Tab is not acurate if you look it up on the net. but if you can get the song down that way I think its a valid way of learning. I know how to read staff music but I have a hard time putting it to the guitar.

Tabs are a good starting point for guitar playing. I used them a lot when I started and gradually forced myself away from them.

This is what I want to do. Do you figure out the Key and the chords and go from there or do you have another method?

I try to figure out the key and chords. I learned In Bloom by ear that way. it takes time but it is rewarding.

Tab is a good place to start, as I started using tab in the 90s, but now can figure out most stuff by ear. Its good at getting your ear trained, or at least for me it was...

If tabs didn't exist, I'd be screwed. I learned everything I know from tabs, and I think they are great, as long as you get CORRECT tabs which is ofter hard to do.

It seems there are three kinds of TABs.

1) Stand-alone TAB that uses the stems and flags from standard music notation. They did this in my first lead guitar book (originally published in the 70's). I dig this kind of TAB.

2) TAB that is coupled with standard notation. Most of the guitar magazines and professional transcriptions use this. I dig this kind, too, though I think I find it slower than the first kind.

3) Internet TAB done with ASCII text. No solid indicators of rythm. Embellishment indicators are iffy. Often it's rather inaccurate. Almost impossible to sight-read without hearing the song peformed by the original artist. While it's neat that folks figured out a way to use ASCII to make TAB, this stuff usually just pisses me off. It burns us, precious.
