I got an email this evening from an online music site I subscribe to and they have a 1968 Gibson B-25 12 string for just $425 plus shipping. The guitar apparently has great playability but has a couple of fairly long parallel splits in the back but they aren't spread apart and would be an easy fix for me to do.What do folks think-should I go for it? I don't have any Gibsons-6 Epis but no Gibsons and I always loved the Gibson acoustic guitar's tone such as the J-45,SJ-200,Dove and Hummingbird so the B-25 should sound great too-at least the one Gordon Lightfoot played for years did.

What about frets ? could need a fret job $$$

Hard to answer to you without seeing the guitar and knowing your skill .

Is it a honest and well know online music site ? Is it a store or a guy ( like Craig list ) ?

Can you see the guitar before buying ? Chance you loose the sale if you wait, lots of people are looking for vintage guitars .

Good luck

Everyone gets burned now and again... part of the game.

But, I suspect that with your knowledge and years of playing, the odds are considerably in your favor.

Also, your confidence in being able to repair it's defficiencies probably makes it a good buy for you.

I, on the other hand, couldn't/wouldn't even consider such a piece... Probably my loss.

+ Not yet to the point where I can justify a 12-string in the stable.

Probably a good 2 years away, at least, from even trying to convince Mrs. Lightnin that's it's something I need, since I'm barely a remedial 6-string player.

But, the day will come !! 8)

Good luck with whatever you decide.

cheers!

G'day, When I bought the new (old) Triolian, I had to act fast. An 80 year old guitar on an overseas site was a gamble for sure. My gamble worked out well.
I don't know much about Gibson acoustics, but it's not like you would lose money on it. You could increase the value. At least it would always be worth what you paid, or thereabouts.Trust your own judgement.

Goodonya ...Mark

Hi guitslinger: it's a no-brainer - do it! :D

You will make a great job of the repairs and have the nice feeling of bringing an old guitar back to life. Then you'll either have the pleasure of owning it, if you like the way it sounds and feels, or you'll sell it at a comfortable markup.

A great find - congrats!

Cheers - C

I asked the seller some pertinent questions about the action, intonation etc. and she sent me a pile of very detailed pix of the neck/string profile and also measured the action at the 1st,7th,12th and last frets and the action would be quite good for a 6 string. She had it checked out by a luthier and then went to another for a 2nd opinion and they both said that it was a great sounding and very playable guitar. The offered to buy it from her but the really low-balled their offers,I guess they were intending to flip it for a quick profit. I made her an offer which I was sure that she wouldn't go for but she accepted it on the condition that I pay the shipping, which I'm prepared to do.I'm going through Pay Pal so I have a bit of protection there I guess if it all goes pear-shaped.I have 2 old 12 strings a mid 60s Vox Phantom XII and a circa 1969 MIJ Saturn that my parents ordered from Eaton's catalogue.I don't have any Gibsons so I figured this would be a good start and there's one just like it going for $1,100,so I had to jump on this puppy.
