Was Mayer playing the Strat that is being given away in the contest?

Negative. Him and Clapton played their matching Crossroads Strats, and then on WOTWTC, Mayer played his Monterey. On Dreaming with a Broken Heart he didn't use a strat.

However, word has it he played Vultures after GMA was done filming. He may have used it then, but lately he's been using his gold leaf Clapton on that song.

The webmaster advised me that, for "Crossroads" performance w/ Clapton, Mayer was playing a one-off version of the Crossroads Antigua guitar that the CS presented him with. I noted that it had a vintage finished neck with a rosewood board and made mention of this. Mayer's blog site confirms this. Additionally, the CS installed his "scooped' pickups in the guitar. The rest of the guitar is the Clapton. I didn't review any of the other performances.

Must say Mayer's tone and performance blew Eric away. The Tweed Twin Reissue combined with Clapton's mid-boost circuit just sounded dull and farty compared to Mayer's much cleaner, sparkling SRV-like "Special Edition 100-only" Strat through the Two Rock. Eric Looked tired and out of sorts as playing at 8 in the morning will do to an old guy. If I was Fender, I'd say that was 4 minutes of killer head-to-head promo for Two Rock and a big ho-hum for the tired old Twin.

Aren't Two Rocks twice as expensive as the '57 Twin Reissues? I knew I shoulda bought more Carlyle Group! Doh!

Its not that he didnt get much solo time. He gave John a nod to solo first then when it came his turn he didnt take much time. But it was great to see them perform together.

Yeaah and it was John's set with Clapton doing a guest appearance. I still enjoyed it a lot though.
