Can I use a non-Fender footswitch for my Mustang II? I am notoriously "frugal" and instead of laying out the princely sum of $20 for a Fender Mustang 1-button footswitch, I wondered if a switch I have for my Crate acoustic guitar amp would work.

It has three buttons on it instead of one, and I'm pretty sure it would still only change the Mustang II between 2 settings, but I was just concerned that if I tried it it might blow out the amp, catch the house on fire and start a major international incident.

Is there anything bad that could happen if I try it out?

I think the worst that can happen is that you step on the switch and... Nothing.

I had that switch once. Just be sure to use proper cables with it. It acted weird without a certain kind (can't remember the brand, but it was a dual cable, one of the cable tips is red, the other white. Its some kinda speaker cable, as it is now used to power my cab)

Thanks for the replies. I took your advice and hooked it up and....BOOOM! All the power went off in my house.

Just kidding. It actually worked. Button #1 works just like the Fender button. It switches between two channels. The other two buttons are non-functioning.

Edit:

Must have posted right as you were posting your reply that it works. Great news. Enjoy.

if its an open/closed type switch, yes you can. Since its got LED's it might not be a simple open closed type switch but some Kind of Voltage control type. I have a mustang II and took an old DI box i wasn't using and threw a stomp switch in it and it works like a charm.

As said up above, worst that will happen is it doesn't work.

The is something worse that can happen, especially when the original pedal has LED's in it. To light those LED's the amp needs to send a few volts down the cable, if you use the wrong kind of cable or the wrong kind of switch then there may be a risk that you're shorting out the supply voltage to those LED's. Won't be enough to cause a shock but power supplies don't like being shorted out for long periods of time. Proceed with caution, check the schematic if it's available, or measure voltages with a meter then figure out if you're running anything more than a couple of volts directly to ground.
