How would describe the music scene where you live? Mine doesn't extactly stack up to that of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, etc. etc. Sure it has a cook-off at the local community college, a brown-bag lunch downtown and a patio concert also downtown but that's about it. It used to have a Lollipop concert. It still has a youth orchestra where they're are occasional concerts. I also don't think they have a concert band (made up of brass, woodwinds, percussian etc. etc.) like they use to years ago. Hey, maybe I should investigate and find some more music in my dot of the world! :)

I disagree with this assessment.

I have seen BB King, Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, Eric Johnson, The Seldom Scene, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Doc Watson (a few months before he died) and numerous other fantastic guitarists and groups in the DC metropolitan area just in the last few years. There are many excellent clubs and venues, both new and older, established ones, that present a wide variety of jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, and other artists.

Lots of variety around New England. Maybe moreso than any other place I've lived. This will give you an idea of the variety:

From Yoyo Ma, famous cellist to rockers, Rob Zombie & Aerosmith.

Going on what I know.

At least it's not Baltimore.

Nashville... we of course have the ever-present country music center of the world, which is fine, just not my thing... there are a few "real" country guys and girls left, like my good friend Jon Byrd... but all the pop-country radio crap is just...well, crap.
there's also a very refreshing east Nashville-based rock scene happening here. bands like The Future, Turbo Fruits, Jeff the brotherhood are regulars at a lot of the "east nashville underground" shows - very good stuff. I love that the music and art community in this city are really a community... there are benefit shows for EVERYTHING, musician swap meets , art galleries that focus on local artists (I had my own sculptures in Art & Invention for a little while) I only wish that I could be more involved in the local scene, but..you know, family comes first, and then work. and then play. not enough playtime for me anymore.

The music scene in Newfoundland is way too centered in Irish/Celtic music and "Traditional Newfoundland Music" which is in many instances is at the very best mediocre and constitutes little more than country music with a button accordion.

We have thriving alternative and blues/jazz communities with some really great musicians in each genre but it all seems to be taking a back seat to Irish/Newfoundland music, which I have come to detest after being subjected to it at most functions such as garden parties, sporting events etc.Less that 10% of the Newfoundland population is of Irish descent but Irish music runs rampant around here.Granted some Irish music such as "Marie of Donegal" sung by The Irish Rovers,is quite beautiful. We also have a lot of English folk music dating back hundreds of years because almost 90% of Nl's population is of British heritage. There is a pretty big Francaphone population here too on the West Coast of the province in the area of Cape St. George and we had two fiddlers who were instrumental in keeping our old Celtic,French and English jigs and reels, they were Emile Benoit and Rufus Guinchard who have achieved folk hero status all over the province,
