first gig tonight in about 6 months. my friend calls me about 2 or 3 times a year to fill in when one of the guitar players can't make it.

had practice last week, and had about 8 days to get 40 songs down. mostly 60's-70's rock, with a few twists thrown in. I get paid and free food too. just spent about 2 hours practicing, but i'm about as nervous as I was at my first gig in '66.

will let you know how it went later

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Just look confident, if you make a mistake then everyone will assume the rest of the bad were wrong instead of you.

If you occasion to be called on to fill in, kill two birds. Keep your chops sharp with regular practice, ask to be kept abreast of their current play list, and employ the two together. As for a level of confidence, that's a very individual thing. Self-assurance comes from inside. It's gotta be viewed as a piece of cake, like you just came off the stage for a break. I had that experience more than a decade ago when my oldest and dearest friend married off his daughter. I hauled my guitar down from NY and we sat in with the band playing 'Roll Over Beethoven'. I had spoken briefly on the phone with the leader weeks before about this. There was no rehearsal. He hadn't been at the drum kit for over 30 years. It went down like we were back on stage after the last set. The same thing several years after when my son got married. Piece of cake. Good musicians share a magic vibe, an aura. A kind of 'yellow brick road'. Once your'e on it, you'll find your way to the Emerald City. Don't take things too seriously. Have fun.

thanks for the great mojo-the gig went great!

we played everything from 60's garage to british invasion to some nugent, as well as a great version of "the weight"

turned on the fuzz for "journey to the center of the mind", which we only played one time before. the guys were gracious, and i'll be playing with them again soon.

this is how I want it to be. I had my years of every weekend gigs (66 to 77) now when I play out, it is fun and not a job. the guys are all around the same age (60) so we don't take ourselves too seriously. in all it was a great night. thanks again, and good vibes to y'all
