Lately I've been back on the kick of wanting to pimp my rides again. Back when I had my Mesa amp, I swore by tube swapping in it. Those amps are greatly transparent to tube changes. Eventually, I was able to make it sound like damn near anything I wanted to by understanding the valve chain and functions of each V position.

I'd received a lot of feedback at the time that I was wasting my time doing it. That speaker changes were much more effective. Although that may be true to achieve a certain sonic quality of an amp, I still swear by tube swapping to achieve much more of a variety of sounds through one amp.

Sadly, I had to sell my Mesa during the economy crash. But recently, I started toying with my Marshall 8100 again. Although it's a far cry from the Mesa, I did manage to take the hybrid amp and tweak it to sound like a pretty mean Marshall tube sound.

Turns out that model really takes well to using a 12at7 instead of a 12ax7. I was able to curb the shrill of the gain and give it more clarity and girth by taming the gain clip a 12ax7 gives it. Not a very glamorous choice, but an NOS GE is exactly what it needed. Much better in this amp than the diva Mullard and Amperex types. Marshall's always seemed to lack bass to me, so bass I gave it. I've got it running through a Celestion V30 at the moment, so I think I'm good there. A nice fit for a Marshall.

But now I'm thinking about new 10" speakers for my Fender HRDV. And I'm struggling a little with it. If there's anything I'd change in that amp, it would be those. Of course, we're talking about 4 of them. Not a cheap venture. I think my tube choices are solid for it, but I'd like to get a little more clarity in the highs out of the speakers. The amp has oozed bass since day one. But the highs tend to be slightly murky.

Any suggestions? The 10" market has never really been my thing. I'm not too up to par in that market.

I am no speaker connoissuer, but putting in a variety of speakers together in one CAB could give you the sound you are looking for, no need for 4 identical speakers in there.

A very good point. I've never been disappointed with the way the stocks handle bass tones. Seriously, I can turn the bass knob to 3 on this thing and its enough, and there's no flub or farts.

I know the tubes I have in it are capable of providing crystal clear glass highs, but it seems the speakers aren't as capable to accompany it. Maybe a 2-speaker swap is possibly needed.

Then again, maybe not...

You'd have to have pretty deep pockets and lots of time to play w/ combinations hoping one works best.

cheers!

Good to see your post Ted. Have fun shopping for speakers Eminence has worked for me in the past, so has Jensen. I had a set of pile drivers in a 2X10" cabinet that screamed allright up until 1990

Thanks, I've been working MAD hours lately SBLS. I haven't been online much. So far, I'm looking at eminence ramrod. I dont know much about their line of 10's. there's not much out there in video land about their legend models.

I would like to get a Swamp Thang 12" one of these days. I do know someone who uses one and it's pretty bomb. If I knew of a similar speaker sound to those in a 10" I'd jump on it.

I wasn't telling him to by 1 of every speaker out there, I was suggesting, in order keep costs down, he could choose the speaker he would have bought 4 of, and only by 1 or 2 instead to go with the existing stock speakers. Then if that is not good enough he could try replacing the others, therefore only spending money when required. AND the final CAB configuration need not have 4 identical speakers.

Jah Soldier,

A page that that proved useful to me when researching a 10" replacement speaker for my SCX2:

http://fenderguru.com/how-to-select-speakers

I chose the Eminence Legend 1058 ($60) for budgetary reasons, as well as its adherence to the classic "Fender Chime". I have been pleased with the tone characteristics and value for the dollar. The page lists quite a number of other options in 10" speakers and offers brief descriptions of what one might expect for tone characteristics in each.
Cheers!

I've read reviews from guitarists who took the stock Fender/Eminence speakers from The Blues Jr. and replace them with Celestion Vintage 30s and that gives the amp a much better tone from clean to roof rattlin' raunchy.I put a Vintage 30 in my first year Traynor Guitar Mate and it opened up sounds that I didn't know were in it.I'm partial to Celestions anyway but Weber also makes some great speakers that emulate some of the old JBLs,Jensens,Oxfords and Celestions, according to their website. I remember someone mentioned them on the amp forum quite a while ago now but they gave them a great name.Their 10" speakers retail for $90-$95 according to the website too.
