Shawn Phillips is on the bill next week at a friend's local Jazz Club. Saw him back in '73 when he was popular.

He's really quite an accomplished musician having roomed with Donovan back in the mid-60s and co-wrote 'Sunhine Superman' and 'Season of the Witch'.

He's also the guy who taught the Sitar to Brian Jones and George Harrison (an association which got him singing background on 'Lovely Rita' w/ album credit).

He also used to often split the bill in the Village w/ Richie Havens and Tim Hardin.

Cheers!

You sure it is THAT Shawn Phillips? I thought he stopped touring a few years ago. I do know for a fact he moved to South Africa years ago. Last I heard was doing the Paramedic/Air-Sea Rescue/Fire Service thing. However he must be nearly 70 years old and that is a younger man's game.

You missed a significant trivia nugget. Mr. Phillips was cast in the role of Jesus Christ for the original Broadway run of "Jesus Christ Superstar" which opened fall of 1971. Unfortunately Mr. Phillip's tour commitments and recording schedule conflicted with doing 7 shows a week, so he backed out and Jeff Fenholt played the lead in the first Broadway run instead. Mr. Phillips looked the part and had the strong tenor pipes for it. Back then lots of musicians looked like Jesus though.

I met him after a concert in Mankato, MN in 1971. He shared his Lebanese flu with us, nice guy too. '2nd Contribution' is one of my favorite albums.

I'm pretty sure that it was George's good friend Ravi Shankar who was instrumental in teaching George the sitar and as for Brian Jones he was pretty well self taught and got some pointers from George.Shawn Philips has always been one of my favourite folk artists since I first heard him back in the late 60s and his Second Contribution album is among my favourites to this day.He also has the distinction of writing the song that has the longest title with."She was Waitin' For Her Mother At The Station In Torino and You Know I love You Baby But It's Getting Too Heavy to Laugh" his voice in this song is just incredible and the whole song is just a musical masterpiece..Shawn also played sitar on Donovan's "Guinevere" and "The Three Kingfishers".

BTW Re Jesus Christ Superstar: Along with Shawn playing the lead role Murray Head-who is best known for his hit "One Night In Bangkok"-played the role of Judas. Before Murray recorded "One Night In Bangkok" he released an album in the mid -70s called "Say It Ain't So Joe" which is a phenomenal album especially the title song which is probably the best vocal performance of that decade. When the album was first released the critics just couldn't praise it enough , it got some of the most enthusiastic reviews that an album was ever given. That reminds me,I had better order the CD right away.

Yes... it is that Shawn Phillips see the Bill here: Shawn Phillips. He moved from NYC to Italy and lived there more than 10 years before moving to the RSA (originally from Fort Worth). Only does Paramedic/Air-Sea Rescue/Fire Service intermittently, (when not touring).

He announced an end to touring in 2011, but I guess the lure of the Road got the better of him, cause he's playing here next monday nite.

I knew about the JCS casting, but omitted it because it wasn't musician related.
He also spent 2 weeks in Saskatoon where he coached a young waitress (Joni Mitchell) on the 12-string.

cheers!

Well... Shawn Phillips took Sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar in Toronto in '65 and it was Shawn Phillips who introduced both Brian Jones and George Harison to the Sitar and taught them both the rudiments, This was before George had even met Shankar, in fact, Phillips played one of Shankars albums for George. George later met Shankar and began formal training with him on the Sitar.

There are some pretty good one-on-one interviews with Phillips here, and here.

cheers!

Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to miss the show. :(

Mrs. Lightnin arrives home from Akron (Bridgestone Invitational) right in the middle of his show and I have to pick her up at the airport.

We are going to the same club the next night however to see Albert Lee. 8)

This is also bound to be a great show !

cheers!

Thanks for the info LMN, I have also been a huge Donovan fan for years and used to sing nothing but Donovan covers-except for a Bob Dylan song-at our local coffee house back in the late 60s,as a matter of fact a very close friend of mine, the late and great Hamish Imlach-also from Scotland, toured with him back in the 60s and 70s.BTW Hamish once told me that Donovan was the most inoffensive, innocuous person that he'd ever met he was just totally peaceful and gentle and you felt immediately at ease with him.I wasn't at all aware that Shawn Phillips was that deeply involved in Donovan's music. It's too bad that the video footage has been pulled because I would've loved to watch them.
