your thoughts, please.

I don't know these guys and I wasn't there, but I have good friends who know them and I've been told it's not the first time this has happened. limited space that's supposed to be unloading zones for musicians, hogged by cabs and/or poLICE cars..... and then the musicians try to squeeze in, just long enough to get the stuff unloaded, and they get hassled ,ticketed, and arrested. and these are of course working musicians, playing for tips and a very little bit of pay from the bars down here. these guys are the reason we have so much tourism on broadway. they shouldn't be treated like this.

I'd say it's time to put the matter before the city council and have some ordinances clarified (or enacted if none currently exist) to level the playing field. Cities with their economies significantly based on tourism depend upon live entertainment and that point should be driven home as succinctly as is necessary to club owners, law enforcement, and anybody else with a vested interest in the success of a city's industry.

Some of the police here in the UK are as bad
I have seen ordinary people hassled, restrained and arrested for nothing with jumped up charges levied at them , in one instance, false witness staements obtained from blatent liars to back the police actions up
Because 2 cars were called out, there then has to be a written report, so false accusatiions were made and enforced, It changed my opinion of the police here

Comes with the territory/job. It happens in other places as well.

Sad, but true.

There are good and bad people in all walks of life, including the police.
I've worked over 19 years in my state's prison system. 15 of those years in our maximum facility housing our state's worst of the worst.
I've been a few stressful situations and I've learned to stay calm and talk respectively. It doesn't matter who's right or wrong at the time. That can be settled later in a more controlled enviroment. What matters, as in this case, going home that evening or going to jail or as in a few casses I was invovled with, literaly living to see another day.

OK....I'm climbing down off my soapbox. I'll step back into my bass player mentality.

DOWN WITH THE PIGS!!!

DISCLAIMER: The last statement in no way is representative of how I truely feel about our men and women employed honorably in our nation's cities and towns police departments. Please do not hold said comment against me and report my statement to my local police department. Peace. :)

I would love to be respectful to ALL police officers, it's a thankless and stressful job that I want no part of. We all want a cop there when we need one but stay away I don't need you.

Within the last two years I've had 3 "run-ins" with police that were directly related to being a musician. Once I was pulled over because the cop thought I should have stopped on the yellow instead of going through, he was giving me a warning and then he looked in the back seat and asked "what's that?" Why, it's a couple guitars, I was on my way to practice. So he tells me I need to step out of the car and allow him to search the vehicle. I let him do it because 1) I had nothing to hide and 2) I figured if I denied him as I had a right to he'd probably give me a ticket.

And twice in this time I have been stopped after gigs when getting a coffee, apparently just because I am out driving at 3 am after a gig I must be a drunk.

It's BS on their part, no denying.

I hope no one thought I was saying down with all police. I absolutely agree there's good and bad with any group of people. And a lot of the things we see as profiling (just leaving a gig at 3am, you must be drunk) is most likely because it's true for a lot of people. there's bad in our group too. but, in music city usa - on broadway, when a musician is unloading his gear - there's no damn reason to pull up and start giving him S***. i mean, you know...if anything, go run off some of the annoying street "musicians" that keep playing "Every rose has it's thorn" over and over and over.... don't hassle the guy playing a legit gig at LAYLA'S. FML.
that being said, my last few interactions with our local police have not been great. lots of A-holes with blue lights around here.
and GRHO, one of my best friends is a CO here, and I have absolute respect for what you guys do. I tip my hat to you, sir.

I didn't think you were downing the police. Just commenting with my opinion, for what it's worth, on how to handle the situation.
The police are always going to win at the scene. Sit down and talk the next day, behind closed doors, when tempers have cooled was what I was trying to point out. You may not get the results you would like, but at least there's a chance. Better than going to jail.

Yeah right, blah blah frickin blah, everyone hates the police.

That's why we don't phone them when our cars get stolen.

I am still trying to figure out why in the Musicians Loading Zone, the cops didn't ticket the cab parked in their spot?

Of course mouthing off to a Cop is never smart and almost never going to get you anywhere them. You can be right as rain, but if you don't talk calmly and respectfully to said police officer, you won't get far, and might end up in the wrong!

Arjay also had a good point. Sounds like working WITH the cops in this case might just yield better results.

FWIW

cooler heads will prevail, for sure.
but if nothing else, the media exposure , i think, will be ultimately a good thing. the police will HOPEFULLY be more mindful of what kind of scene they're starting. and about the cab drivers and whatnot, WHO KNOWS. this is a city of one way streets, no parking, construction everywhere you look, and stereotypical CRAZY effin' cabbies doing whatever they please, and come to think of it I've NEVER EVER seen a cab pulled over. hmmmm....
that's weird.
