Well if you do go inside, could you snap off a couple of pics of that too. I never got into resonator guitars, although I like the sound, I'm more of a lap steel guy. I'd like to see some pics of the insides.

It is a collectible player... The original case being so solid is almost unheard of. That is a keeper.

Yes indeed! What a find! :D

Nice catch, Mark. Just dripping with vibe. Congrats.

Great photos too, thanks.

Enjoy! - C

hmm, surprisingly the interior is clean as a whistle, not even worth dusting.
The woodwork is solid and "as new". Note the green felt around the rim of the soundwell.

The cone is fine, a few tiny dings. Some of the biscuits on these were screwed on, some attached with brad nails or glued. Mine's glued, so I guess it stays as one unit. This is the original biscuit with patent stamps. The saddle is a bit worked on but there's still plenty of height. I had the high strings slip out of the bridge a few times earlier. I'm just going to tidy up the slots with my new nut files.

Time to re-string and play for a while before bed.

I've played it now for a few days and I'm lovin' it. The action would be a little high for fretting in standard tunlng, but it suits my playing style well. Most old Nationals have had a neck re-set or need one, and that's something I factored in when I bought it from overseas. For now though, it's just great to have an 80 year old steel bodied Reso as my everyday player. It's worked out well. I can't really explain the difference an old guitar makes.

That is one of the coolest relics that I've ever seen, imagine all the great music that must have come from that for the past 7 decades or more. You really lucked out with that find don't do anything with it beyond a simple set up and string change to do anything else to it would be an affront to all the previous owners/players who have left their marks and wear on it over the years-there's a lot of great music left in her.

Thanks guitslinger, yes, I agree with everything you say. No need to do anything more to it. I tweaked the saddle a bit and solved the slipping strings issue. I finger-pick heavily so now I can really do my thing on it.
And the history of it, yes, it blows my mind. I suspect the lady who owned it played a lot of Hawaiian music which was huge at the time.

Some research,
The Triolians were introduced around 1928 as a more affordable alternative to the Tricone. They were originally wooden bodies and supposed to have three cones. For some reason this wasn't practical and the single cone resonator was born. The name "Triolian" was retained.

ImageImageImage

These are fairly simple to accurately date. The serial number places it in 1933. The "P" stands for Polychrome. Others are stamped with "W" ,which is a Walnut burst. The Polychrome finishes varied greatly. In '33, pea green was introduced into the mix, so I guess that's what I have. I know the color of mine looks different in every photo, and that how it is. Depending on the light it goes from bright yellow to a darker olive green. These other examples show the variations of the polychrome. Also with the crudely stenciled palm trees, no two are alike.

I hope some of you are finding this interesting, I sure am

Here's a late 20s wood bodied example.

IMO There are parts of a guitar that should not be painted
