I just picked up this beautiful relic. A 1933 National Triolian.

ImageImageImage

It's not exactly in "collectors condition", but it seems to be 100% original. The tuners, tailpeice, biscuit, saddle, and cone all appear to be correct. She still bears (what's left of) her original Polychrome paintjob. The neck is nice and straight.
Even with these rusty old strings, it sounds great.
I have to go to work now, unfortunately, but I will post more details and pictures.

Goodonya ....Mark.

I contacted the seller for some history on the guitar and received this reply-

"Hi Mark, This was purchased brand new during the Great Depression era here in the US, as a gift for the woman I bought it from. She is in her 90's and has been teaching guitar since she was 14. An amazing woman who has taught 100's of students guitar, accordion, pedal steel, harmonica, piano, banjo, mandolin, and many other instruments. She played the guitar you bought extensively through her long career in music."

So that's nice eh? One lady owner. There's not a single dent. Just decades of honest play-wear.

It came with the original purple fuzz lined case.

There's a faded Hula girl painting on the case lid, a cool bit of 30s folk art.

String change tomorrow and some forensics.

Thanks for your appreciation.

A very nice piece of Americana through and through. Think of the stories that instrument could tell.

That's a beauty Mark. Only one word of caution. I wouldn't go too deep on the forensic end unless you have a lot of experience with resonators. It doesn't take much to turn them into a buzzing can of bees at that age or really any age. If it plays well and the neck's great, I'd just change the strings on at a time and play the snot out of it. Enjoy it and congrats!! Nice photographs too! Thanks for sharing a beautiful piece of history.

Cheers 63supro, duly noted. I'm no expert but I have a few other resos that I've had apart. I'll just have a look inside. I want to see the neck stick and check out the cone and biscuit. There's no truss rod, so I can't do too much to it. The most ambitious thing I would ever do, is to make a new ebony saddle, but not right away.
It will be put back together nice and tight. I got some Martin Bluegrass Resonator strings .016 -.056 . It'll be EPIC.

Much, much coolness and vibe emanating from that machine--congratulations!

I love the history behind it, too...

Happy New (Very Old) Guitar Day!

You'll probably find a good bit of dust in it too. I took a cheap Reso and put a Beard cone in it. That's as far as I go with resonators. I had some issues but sorted them out. The Beard cones are nice replacements. I bought a cheap resonator to see how much I'd like it and the Beard really improved it. Now I'm looking at the real deal.
A lot of times with older resonators they need a neck reset do to the fact they have no truss rods. If you get a good one that's awesome. Usually you can tell how the necks going by looking at the biscuit. I've seen them sanded way down. I seriously messes with the tone. But Mark, it looks like you hit pay dirt. The natural wear for me would be a bonus.

It is a collectible player. Very significant instrument in my view. The resonators were as important to the musical heritage of the USA, as the banjo, even though the two went in different directions musically. The original case being so solid is almost unheard of. That is a keeper.
