The first time I saw JJ was in the early 70s.

There was a huge crowd there for Leon Russell and JJ was one of the opening acts.

His band sat in a semicircle and JJ had his back to the huge crowd. He never addressed the audience in any way. We just thought that he was shy because of the big crowd.

He was playing an old beat-up acoustic with the back off and a pickup stuck on. It was more like a group of friends sitting around playing for fun than a concert, and we were just allowed to sit in the back and listen. Mac Gayden played his signature slide parts on Crazy Mama. It was a great time.

Rest easy, Mr Cale.

Ha - great!

The time I saw him we were waiting for the show to start and eventually some shabby looking guy in a long coat with his back to the audience ambled on and started tinkering with an amp. We all took him for a tech and paid no attention. Then he picked up a guitar and started tuning it. Then he began playing it, in a very lean kind of way. Then he turned to the mic and started singing - good grief, that tech was the star of the show! He opened with Mama Don't Like..., bringing the band on one by one. And bingo; we were off.

About as unstarry as it gets. Sheer style! 8)

Sadly gone, but unforgettable.

Cheers - C

it's a shame that we don't discover some of these artists earlier in their career.

I don't know about jj cale early on. I saw that he wrote "call me the breeze" and other songs, but didn't put it together for years.

great talent, gone too soon

Cocaine and After Midnight are among my favorites.

I really like the Michelob version

Oddly enough, I always loved the Michelob version better as well...as cool as the originals (JJ's and EC's) were, the later-days Beer version just oozed the vibe of a smokey blues joint at closing time...

I love so many of JJ's songs, it's irritating that I never saw him live. :| oh well, perhaps we'll meet again and he can school me then...

Just found out about JJ. Sad news indeed.

Loved his music. It was through JJ Cale that I learned the importance of quality over quantity. The man could play slow and easy and still be the most awesome guitarist on the stage just because it sounded so cool.

It is not how many notes you play, it's how you play them.

RIP JJ,

Saw this picture of Eric playing a couple of JJ Cale songs with Jim Keltner, Marty Rifkin and Don White.

The guitar used for this tribute show is a 1930s Gibson L5 that was a gift from Cale several years ago.

If you don't presently, ya'll need to own the DVD "To Tulsa and Back". Minus some of the personal anecdotes herein regarding live performances, it best look inside JJ Cale, his life, and why he was beloved by his audiences. They called him the breeze....a laid back tornado who blew everyone away.

Did you have a couple of trivia concerning the Gibby L5 Clapton used for the JJ Cale Tribute show? We already know this guitar was a gift from JJ to old slowhand himself...

FYI Eric used a similar guitar in the late 1980s/early 1990s which can be seen and heard on I Wish It Would Rain Down with Phil Collins....

I was at the John Mayer show in Irvine, CA on the 27th and JM mentioned his passing the day before (I was unaware of it at the time), talked a bit about him, and commenced playing "Call Me the Breeze" as a tribute. The song, coincidentally, is also a track on his new album, Paradise Valley.

Perhaps its time for Mayer to switch gears and head in a different direction.

I just mentioned it because I thought it was cool of him to give a shout out to one of his early influences (on stage and on the new record).
He is constantly switching gears and trying new things, that's what I like about him...he's not afraid to change it up and explore a little. While I most prefer the rock/blues stuff with his regular band, I also really enjoy the JM Trio. The pop stuff is what pays the bills, right? And, now Paradise Valley, is very country.
He's just gotten a pretty beat up rep for his terrible interviewing skills and the fodder he's provided for TMZ and the like.

*sorry for the thread drift, JJ...we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
