Love 'em or hate 'em, the current band is playing to large crowds. Just as in the early 1990s, they are "different," if nothing else. I saw them live in August 2010--when this lineup had not been together very long--and it was powerful. Unlike what is shown in a compressed youtube video, they hit you with the bass and it's a sort of dark, powerful mood. Like, they come on the stage and mean business. I saw them follow Slash (no joke--this was the Sunset Strip Music Festival in 2010), and after seeing Slash rip it up, I was thinking, "Man, that's a tough act to follow," and they did it. They came on and really made Slash's sound seem small.

The current band has been together longer than many bands ever last: the 2nd guitarist, Jeff, has been with Billy since 2007, and the bassist (Nicole) and drummer (Mike) have been in the band since early 2010. All are considered top level musicians.

I especially like Nicole. :D

Siamese Dream is one of my favorite albums from the 90s, maybe favorite albums period. I’ll happily check out the new Pumpkins.

Billy Corgan has a lot of screen time in the Rush “Beyond the Lighted Stage” doc. It was cool seeing him in that too. I always thought the opening of Cherub Rock was a tip of the hat to By Tor and the Snow Dog and Cygnus X-1 and after seeing him in the doc it all made sense.

Pumpkins are still one of my lifetime favorites. Such memories growing up to SP.

I liked the Smashing Pumpkins earlier stuff before they had major label success. You can easily tell how the sound changed once they started showing their video's on MTV. I liked 3 maybe 4 songs off of the Siamese Dream album as they became more commercialized even though they still somewhat tried to maintained some of the original sound. When I saw the band before they had major record label success Billy Corgan, lha and D'arcy were just freaking amazing. They packed the clubs even then cause everyone that saw them couldn't stop talking about what they just heard. A totally different sound then any other band yet still freaking heavy and very psychedelic. IMO Billy became more interested in the money coming in then the music. The music became what the record label wanted. A lot of the original fans they had in the beginning were turned off by the change even though the band gained many new fans from MTV.

Oh yes, she's much better than D'Arcy I think. Plays well and looks hot doing it.

Just watched that RUSH documentary now, thanks to you CAPTAINC. Geez I was blown away, I never knew such a great longtime band from Canada existed. Props to that band (RUSH). They are truely great musicians.

Glad you enjoyed it. One of the fascinating spots on that for me was the footage of Alex discussing dropping out of highschool with his family at the table to go off and do the band thing. Full color and sound and that had to be 1969 or 1970. Some family member thought enough to film that i guess and did a great job taboot. Anyhoo... i don't want to hijack the thread talking about Rush so i'll leave it at that.

I watched the Guitar Center Sessions episode and their concert video. Billy is still great and his band can play. I like the old music though hopefully the new fans will warm up to the new music.

+1 SBLS

I really enjoyed some of the older stuff, but after seeing them this year I can say honestly that their new stuff is good, too. Even if Corgan isn't pumping out hits, per se, anymore, I am still a fan.
