An American Standard is hardly an investment piece to keep hidden in a closet, I'd suggest play it or sell it. If you're happy to keep it in your closet, then that's your choice also.

im really leaning towards selling it to be honest. I just have a feeling i will regret it in the end. I still have to think more about it. thanks for all the input. I know it seems like i don't have a mind of my own, but i just really like to hear different points of views. Honestly i have pretty strong opinions on most all things. though i do like to hear what other people have to say

If I bought it new I'd keep it, because you are going to lose quite a bit of money by selling it and because of the lifetime warranty on the neck, etc. Sitting in the case is not going to hurt it one bit.

If you bought it used, then sell it. There's more out there. Either way sounds like you aren't going to play it much if any at all.

No matter if you bought it new or used, the longer you keep it the more it will be worth in trade or in a private sale.

I sympathize with you. I have a parts Frankenbass that has been my number 1 for nearly 10 years, some of it is Fender and some of it isn't. I have several Fenders (too many) some of which are worth more than my car and I frequently get pressured to bring this one or that one and also to buy another 5 string again or maybe try a 6 string. They can kiss my foot because I play what I want and I don't tell them what to play. I prefer it highly over any other bass I have. It is the one in my forum avatar here and the one you'll see me playing 95% or more of the time. I just love that thing. It could be partly because I built it, but I honestly play it better and just love the way it sounds.

Some bands do frown on import guitars and basses. Keep the American Standard.

If a band (as an entity) is that much of a "Gear Snob," I wouldn't play with them.

Their criteria should be (1) the player's ability, (2) the player's attitude, (3, and lastly) the player's "look" (including gear, dress & grooming, and stage presence).

Case in point: who would have thought that SRV (battered Strat, Bolero hat, kimono amd tats) would have fit with early 80's David Bowie and Niles Rogers? Yet, the "Let's Dance" album was amazing....and that would have been an interesting sight had SRV chosen to tour with Bowie, as originally planned.

Obviously, you wouldn't put a guy who dresses/plays an instrument like Synyster Gates in a bluegrass band...or would you?
