So i have an am st jb that i never use. it pretty much sits in its case at my house in my closet. I always feel vulnerable when playing it. I am scared i am going to break it or wreck it somehow. I just recently picked up a modern player jazz bass and i am in love with it. it does the job just fine. So, what do you think? should i keep it and never play it? or should i sell it and get another couple of cheaper basses that i will actually use because i am not worried if they get beat up.

dude, play that thing and let it get a little beat up. it happens. that's part of what makes Fenders so cool. they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Look at it this way, if you sell it...some other dude is gonna play it and not worry about it like you are...most likely.
play it. that's what it was made for.

Why did you buy the American Standard in the first place?

Why would you be more likely to damage an American made bass instead of a cheaper Chinese made bass?

If you are that worried about damaging an instrument, why do you bother to play?

Honestly i was in this band that was doing really well. ironically we are no longer a band lol. they insisted that i bought an american fender. they actually wanted me to get a deluxe! I was like, nah man. so i somewhat got forced into buying the bass. in normal circumstances i pretty much refuse to spend more than 600 dollars on a bass.

You should learn to think for yourself, rather than buying or selling your bass, based on what someone else thinks you should or should not do.

My mid 80's Jazz USA Standard was my main ax for years. Then I ordered a bass with my choice of woods and the Jazz sat in my closet. A friend bought my Jazz for his son and I was glad it would be played.

Now I regret selling it as I can not afford to buy one (retired).

Play the dang thing! If you can't bond with it, don't ask for advice, find something you do bond with.

Good luck.

My opinion (re: guitars) is the exact opposite of your line of thinking, actually.

Keep the good bass!

I have a few American Standards and also a few cheaper Asian-made guitars, and I find myself, even at my beginner level, noticing a clear tone difference, and I want the best tone I can get.

I'm actually considering selling my three cheapest guitars (which would raise about $1200) to get a Deluxe Reverb tube amp (yeah...don't even need that much $ for that). (I already have a few American guitars or I'd get that with the money.)

Or I'd like to sell even the amer standards and get an amer deluxe and have one really awesome "my guitar" that I can grow with.

Oh i definitely bond with it. Its by far one of the nicest basses i have ever set my hands one. I just get nervous with expensive stuff I am always afraid i will break it or wreck it in some fashion. Also, i just recently bought a modern player jazz bass. I am in love...it sounds and plays amazing. it was also in a perfect price range..I actually prefer it to my mia jazz bass

see, i have owned my fair share of different basses. I find myself not very impressed with higher end models. i used to own a squier vintage modified jazz bass with the dunkin design pick ups in it.. i would easily compare that bass to a higher scaled fender. that thing was a truly amazing instrument

I play and beat on my 1979 S-70 almost every day.

There were less than 250 recorded as ever being made, and it's USA made.

Don't be afraid, instruments are usually built to take a beating.

I understand your feelings on not wanting to scratch or nick your good bass, but I have to agree with the others. These instruments are meant to be played, not to be hung in museums.

I felt similarly about my brand new car a few years back. The first time I got the inevitable minor scratch on the finish, I was ticked about it for a couple of days. Now, there are several little scratches and imperfections on both the inside and the outside of the vehicle and it's no big deal.

Your guitar is simply a tool, a means of expression. The sounds coming out of it are way more important than what it looks like coming out of the case!

And, just remember, there has been an incredible amount of fantastic music that's been written and performed on some pretty beat-up ol' guitars!

I'm sure Joe, Willie and Eddie weren't too worried about those nicks and scratches!
