A diverse city, culturally, musically, architecturally, in general really. Most people have a favorite band from Chicago including the band Chicago. Hot summers cold winters, in the winters the windy city has "the hawk" when the wind comes whipping around that concrete jungle it can knock you off your feet if you're not careful. If you get the chance come visit if only for art and music. You won't be disappointed.

CUBS or SOX?

I'm a Sox fan. Wrigley field is my favorite ball park. I was there last Friday for Pearl Jam. We didn't have tickets so we hung out on the Waveland Avenue side with a thousand or so other Pearl Jam fans and listened to the concert. They played until 2am because of the rain delay. Good times Bros.

10 years is a very short time in terms of changing diversity for a region based on residency, but go on.

Maybe I'm missing something ....

If #1 would be the 'most diverse'
New York is 5th
and Houston is 8th

How does that mean that Houston rivals New York City in diversity?

Also, note the data I posted refers to New York STATE and Texas STATE, not cities. Rebecca said New York, not New York City.

AND if you're going to post conflicting information, you should give your source or don't bother.

But other than all that, I see exactly what you're saying.

whoa, dude. I was just curious as to what newer info would bring to light... if 10 years is relatively not a lot, then the difference between 79.6 and 80.5 (what I was trying to point out as how they're very close) is definitely not a lot.
also, looked at your source, and the second map there by "urbanized area" mapping they are literally right on top of each other... but, either way, dude... just an observation. I thought that info seemed a little outdated, wondered if there was a newer study out there, found one, posted info. all I was trying to say is that the numbers, on all these charts, are very close, and thereby I think it is fair to say houston, or texas, or that general area rivals new york, or NYC, or NYC/NJ/NEWARK/ETC as it's listed ... didn't mean to step on your toes.

I live in a small town just south of Fort Worth (the city limits butt up against one another). My town is pretty boring overall (until recently), so I'll tell more about my neighbors to the north.

There's a lot of Red Dirt and Alt-Country music (more of the former than the latter) as well as the mainstream country bars.

There used to be quite a great blues scene around here. There was an element of Gulf Coast/Excello blues in the FW Blues style, but there was a lot old-school/50's & 60's R&B mixed in there, too. It started dying down about ten years ago, but recently J&J's Blues Bar reopened, so there's a glimmer of hope!

There's a excellent jazz scene in FW, too, both currently and historically.

All of those styles mixed and mingled in the dives and honky-tonks out on Jacksboro Highway back in the 50's, 60's and early 70's, which led to the hybrid Blues-Rock-Outlaw Country style "Roadhouse Music"...that's what we (the Screamin' Armadillos) try to play.

A LOT of cowboy culture, what with the Stockyards and the (historical) cattle drives; there's also a HUGE Mexican sub-culture on the North and South sides of town. Leftover from the days of segregation, the African-American culture used to be limited to a small community in the west side called "Como" or "Lake Como", but there's a large African-American community in the east side, as well as the South Downtown area.

Besides the nicknames "Cowtown" and "Panther City", FW started being called "Funky Town" about 15 years ago...partially due to a burgeoning hip hop/r&b scene, which is fairly well established at this point...that newer nickname has been appropriated by the arts-heavy areas around Magnolia Street, 7th Street and the entire Arts District, and the move to "Keep Fort Worth Funky" echoes the sentiment expressed in the slogan "Keep Austin Weird" (try to stay regionally unique and fight the corporate creep-in/takeover of chain stores and restaurants).

The Bass Brothers have re-invented downtown Fort Worth (Sundance Square, especially), and there's living quarters, entertainment, restaurants, etc., all mixed up in a giant urban renewal project.

Currently, there's a new venue called "Panther Island Pavilion", which has a floating audience (people can either sit on the opposite bank of the Trinity River, or float in a tube to get closer to the stage). There's also a new development that is supposed to create a San Antonio-esque River Walk along the Trinity. I have doubts about both of these projects due to the fact that you're not supposed to eat fish from this tributary...why would I get in water that make fish unsafe to eat? :o

We have several world-class art museums (Kimball, Modern, Amon Carter) and dozens of excellent art galleries. There's also Casa Mañana, Bass Hall, the Jubilee Theatre, Circle Theatre, etc. for plays and etc. The Main Street Arts Festival (every April) is pretty primo as well.

Taxes are fairly low, housing is somewhat reasonable, but the politics are hairy and there's a lot of unfairness to the less-monied portion of the populace, but isn't that everywhere?

As the bumpersticker from the 1970's said, "Foat Wuth, Ah Luuuve Yu!"

hey it's cool, I think we're just talking apples and oranges here, I'm from New York, so when I hear someone say 'New York' I think New York State, not the city.

Well dang, I'm gone a week and come back to find that I've started a comment war!

For clarification's sake, I meant New York City. Down here, "New York" automatically means NYC. My friends from New York (the state and the city) find that about as annoying as when I hear someone refer to a town or region of Texas as just "Texas". Texas is huge, you could be talking about anywhere! For instance, after the recent explosion in West, TX, I saw #prayfortexas all over Twitter before I knew what happened. It made me wonder what the heck was going on, and freak out a little as thoughts of an impending zombie apocalypse came to mind... Anyway, back on topic.

I also didn't mean New York State vs. all of Texas. Of course Texas as a whole isn't as diverse. Once you hit the rural areas, your chances of finding a good place to eat that doesn't involve barbecue and chicken fried steak will decrease dramatically. I was referring specifically to the Houston area, and to the fact that the city is growing like crazy and not just with cowpokes.

10 years actually has made a difference here. Or 20 years, according to this article...

By "rival", I meant it's close. I never said it's the most diverse, and I never said it was more diverse than New York (City). IMO, 5th and 8th place are pretty darn close. :)

Echoing Rebecca's thoughts (this would not post earlier for some reason):

From my (admittedly limited) time in New York (City and State), the celebrated diversity drops considerably after a body leaves NYC...there were a lot of Crackers and Honkies outside of the urban areas and not a whole lot more, from what I saw.

Houston is one of the most International of cities of the southern US, probably due to the petroleum, aerospace and shipping industries. People (especially those from Hollywood and the Northeast US) generally think all of Texas is a dry, dusty prairie dotted by tumbleweeds, longhorns and oil derricks and populated solely by white people wearing cowboy gear and driving trucks or white Cadillacs.

Houston is the polar opposite of that description (ZZ Top notwithstanding)... 8) 8) 8)

It's a big state (not as big as Texas, but still big). Driving from Montauk to Buffalo is about a 10 hour trip. You probably drove an hour or 2 upstate and figured the whole area looked like that. Try going south instead of north next time. Drop by Wyandanch, Shirley, Spring Valley or Brentwood (to name a few).

where do you live up there , strings?

i will say, my dad married a girl from NY when I was about 10... I was very depressed when we visited her family for the summer. I expected NYC and got what looked like Indiana. lol
but I did have fun playing in barns , going to demolition derbies, and watching animal control come trap a rabid raccoon that was up in a tree. yep. that was my New York experience.

I don't remember the name of the town, but it was very rural and very WHITE.

of course I'm only telling you my experience, not saying the whole state is that way. obviously. for all intents and purposes, strings, i'll give you this win. lol
