Man I just can't stop typing today I'm running on all cylinders

So I thought we could share some insight about where are our members typing from and some of their city/country culture. Here I'll start:

Typing from Oporto, Portugal

We have some great musical culture here in Portugal. Home of the Fado (check Amália Rodrigues or Marisa on youtube if you have the time), the portuguese guitar (either from Coimbra or Lisbon).

Here's Carlos Paredes the best ever with the portuguese guitar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9cqXIk2B04

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkQhaXi0ACw

Oh did I mention we have a great students tradition.

Every year there is Monumental Serenata (traduction goes something like Monumental Serenade)

Our Tunas (i don't know how to translate that sorry  ) bring some joy to the students life. Here have an example (this is the one from my college back in 2000)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L6bO4aqG1c

Anyway this is a bit of insight of my world let's see yours :D

welcome aboard, slowfingers!
I'm in Nashville, TN - USA... "music city" which mostly means "country music city" but we have quite the rock scene building here now.... Jack White lives around here now, so that's exciting... also, great local bands (and friends of mine) Turbo Fruits, The Features, The Future...
some other cool things about this area is we have legendary guitar shops like Gruhn's, GIBSON guitars is based here (I'm not a gibson guy, but it's still neat to see them involved in the commnity so much) , and because it's music city, almost everyone you meet either plays in a band, plays an instrument, or is related to someone slightly famous that was in some band...lol... and for a guy like me that means there's no shortage of cool stuff on the local Craigslist. I'm always wheelin' and dealin'...

Hey Nashville always was one of the places I wanted to visit if I ever set my foot on the USA. It has so much music associated to it I wouldn't even know where to start!

Always been a sucker for those 335 Gibson makes (I love Fender but 335 just screams blues all over to me  )

Me and the wife did Nashville a few years ago. Fly into Atlanta hire a car and drive there stopping off at Lynchburg TN for the Jack Daniels tour.

You have to do the Country Music Hall of Fame and the RCA studio B tour and the Ryman. Then you can watch Gibson building bluegrass instruments in the mall near the Opry.

Then on to Memphis for Sun, Stax, Beele Street and the Gibson Custom Shop tour.

I am in London.

We have a range of Venues from pubs and clubs to Stadiums and arenas and you can normally find a band to watch any night of the week.

We have major open air shows in the city now with a series of concerts in Hyde Park this summer and the Hard Rock Calling Festival which has now moved to the Olympic Park.

Brixton Academy and Hamersmith Odeon are great places to see mid level bands and there is nothing like seeing a band in the Royal Albert Hall.

Denmark Street is where you go to buy guitars in the center and is where the Stones Recorded their first album and many stars bought their guitars. Its a bit of a tourist trap and can be expensive, but Vintage and Rare guitars have some fantastic stuff.

About an hour out of the city you can find some fantastic guitar shops with Guitar Guitar in Epsom, Andertons in Guliford, GAK in Brighton and Guitar Village in Farnham.

Placerville California checking in. I live in a small foothill town that was known as ol' Hangtown back in the gold rush days (swift justice I guess...lol). We are about 39 mins from the state capitol Sacramento (on a good day in traffic) and 2 hours away from San Francisco. Coloma ,where James Marshall discovered gold starting the official gold rush in 1849 in the west, is 15 mins from me. Lake Tahoe Is a fun place to go and play and is 45 mins from me (but I try not to gamble, to many Fenders to save for..lol). Well that about sums up whats around me, how about your neck of the woods?

Typing from Columbus, Ohio. We're not exactly known for music. In fact, many of today's top artists won't play even here. It's all about Ohio State University football...which I despise. At least we have the internet now, to get our music somewhat "out there".

Most of the best musicians are a half hour away, in a smallish town..known as Lancaster.

I live in a town right on the east coast of Norfolk, England.

most of the pubs I used to play in 8-10 years ago are now closed. there are some nightclubs down the seafront where the local idiots gather.

that's about it.

oh and a music shop, that in reality is a piano/keys shop. and if youre not interested in one of those, you might aswell not exist as far as the staff are concerned. I once brought some picks and a lead off them.

Living near the gold rush... now that's an interesting tour right there! :D

Come on folkey everyone has their bit of culture!

I don't know a lot about NC. I mainly know NC because of their college basketball. I'm a huge fan of basketball in a country where soccer is King and rules with an iron fist which reminds me... there is a Portuguese soccer team (Sporting CP) playing a couple of games in Canada (Toronto if I'm not mistaken). Do we have anyone from those areas around here? 8)

You still got more than we do.
If it weren't for yogurt, Charlotte would have no culture.

I live in a rual town in eastern Oklahoma, but I did grow up in a suburb of Oklahoma City (OKC). OKC is approx 120 miles to the west and Tulsa is 85 miles to the north.
There's a large man made lake which the town borders, so lots of fishing, hunting and camping around here. Also boating, jet skies etc... Lot's of tourist during the summer.
There use to be plenty of places for bands to play 2 or 3 nights a week. Seemed liked every little bar or club had a band. Pay was decent. Now only a few places around, mostly saturday night only, and they pay about the same as they did 20 years ago.
There has always seemed to be plenty of good pickers and singers around. Mostly country. I know quite a few who are really good and love to sit around the house and pick, but have no interest in playing gigs. It's not unusual to hear some good music around a campfire in one the many campgrounds around.
We've had some make it big in country music, Reba McIntire, Vince Gill, 3 members from Restles Heart are Okies, Carrie Underwood (grew up about 10 miles north of here - rival town), Ronnie Dunn of Brooks and Dunn and Garth Brooks. That's a few off the top of my head.
Other genres as well. The GAP Band and Leon Russel are from Tulsa. By the way, GAP stands for Greenwood, Archer and Pine. 3 streets in Tulsa.
Also some actors in Hollywood, such as old western star Tom Mix, Tony Randell, James Garner, Brad Pitt and I believe Chuck Norris was born here and moved to California when he was around 11 or 12.
As in Ohio, sports play a big part in the state. Oklahoma Sooners (most popular), Oklahoma State Cowboys and Tulsa Huricanes. Now OKC has an NBA team, the Thunder. They have done well the past couple of years.
Most people are friendly and are willing to help anyone who is willing to help theirselves. We believe in a hand up.....not a hand out.

Well the Thunder is the team I support in the NBA. Also they built up that team from out of the blue and I'm looking forward to see where they are going. Have to see one of their games live somewhere in the next 4/5 years but that is going to imply a trip all the way across the Atlantic! 8)

Sounds like a great town to sit back and relax a bit. Great to hear you have some musical references too!

sordid, sorry to tell you this, but the opry mills mall was flooded back in 2010, and gibson lost pretty much everything they had there.... they didn't come back when it re-opened..i believe their spot is now a Chuy's mexican restaurant. so sad. again, I'm not a gibson guy, but I appreciate them for what they are, and it was always a good getaway when the wife was shopping around in the mall... I'd go sit in one of those soundproof-ish rooms and play with a flying V :D

Man, what I wouldn't give to see London. I have a friend from high school that moved out there...met a guy online, got married, just had baby number 2... She's even got an accent after 10 years over there..funny, that.

I guess the grass is always greener...

grho, speaking of country stars.... how about Nick Kane from the mavericks is the high end/vintage guitars / pedal guy at the Sam Ash around the corner from me. You never know who you'll meet in Nashville.

Spent a week in Nashville one time. Most friendly people you will meet, but they didn't know who I might be and I didn't know who they might be!
