I've just bought an iPad mini. I'm looking for a good video converter to convert my AVIs and MKV files into the MP4 format that the iPad needs to play them. The problem is I've tried a few and they make the picture quality worse. I'm using a pc running Windows 7. Any help is appreciated.

VLC Media Player does format conversion but the interface is really fiddly and not at all intuitive. Give it a try though, it's an excellent FREE media player and if you need help with it then there's a dedicated forum.

I have a very cheap lifetime subscription with AVS4you ($60 for all their software for ever)

There are free versions , though these are watermarked. easy to use apps for any media.

Also Virtual Dub is free , but quite complex to use

Freemake Video Converter is a great free program. I've also used Handbrake for Apple conversions

Seems my PC is a POS. :(

Using both Handbrake and Fremake cause it to shut due to overheating.

My PC also went through a phase of thermal shutdowns recently. The solution? Remove the CPU heatsink, clean all the accumulated dust out of the cooling vanes and replace it. Runs very cool now!

Don't use a cheap thermal paste when re-assembling either.

Handbrake, Mpeg Streamclip, and Quicktime Pro. I work in Broadcast and use all three to get me out of a jam

I might be a little late to the party, but....

I've been using 'Tunebite' by 'Audials' for a long time, it gets the job done.

Once I started using it, I never looked for another program.

Thanks!

Handbrake is the one I've gone with. My Home PC is a POS and was running hot and shutting itself down with Handbrake. I installed it on my work laptop instead which is top of the line and it's working like a charm. It converts all of my movie files to MP4 but also compresses them to a smaller size without a loss in picture or sound quality. Result!
