What's everyone's favorite overall effect or mannerism that does not come as a pedal, e.i. ambiance, bending of strings, mixing tape played backwards, slides, etc. etc. Unusual effects, mannerisms would be much appreciated! :D

Has to be bending strings. Bending strings is *everything*.

I have learned this by listening to John Mayer and other greats while knowing that I suck at bending, which is why my playing does not sound musical and my guitar does not sound like it's crying.

Boss used to have a vibrato pedal and you can find numerous vibrato pedals out there. Did you mean vibrato as in a whammy bar? :?

I'm not sure what the sound is called. I'm not sure how it happens, but it does occasionally. I don't even know how to accurately describe it, but it's a cool sound.

It's like a natural shriek type thingy.

@Buxom
It might be an accidental pinch harmonic.
They can happen when the thumb strikes the string immediately after the pick.

Idk what it is, but it's got kind of a vibrato-y sound to it. Idk if i'm describing it right, but it only happens within the first couple frets after some hard play.

I have spent an enormous amount of time over the years mastering bending and hand/wrist/finger vibrato so I feel that I am competent enough with them as is.The only effect that I'd love to be able to emulate is the backwards guitar effect like Jimi used for the lead break of "Are You Experienced?" and for the intro and many parts of "Castles Made of Sand".I have been trying for years to perfect a pseudo-backwards effect by using a volume pedal but it's near impossible to really emulate the effect to the point that it sounds realistic. If someone could come up with a real time backwards tape effect I would certainly have one in my pedal chain as soon as they came to market. All it should take is something that could duplicate the "Attack Time" function of a synthesizer so that the note would "fade" in rather than start off loud and then fade.

Favorite effects?

For rhythm it's palm muting.

For lead it's pinch harmonics.

I hate pinch harmonics with a passion. for me it just screams tight lycra one piece suits and blokes using their womans hair products. no thanks.

I like pre bending a string, and plucking it as you slowly release it. awesome noise. or just pluck it once and release it slowly.

But what about when Billy Gibbons pulls out the pinch harmonics? He is big beard, not big hair!

I would never dismiss zz top.

but after watching a recent gig of them on bluray, I couldn't care less. I thought, from listening to their music and seeing the videos, they were going to be some gritty down to the roots blues/rock band.

unfortunately I was faced with the complete opposite, a completely over the top 'performance' complete with truck exhausts for mic stands. it made me cringe to be honest.
