That is the question.
So, I'm a bit behind on some bills. It may be a few months or more before I get caught up. My casual job hasn't called in months, so I'm left with a decision to sell or not to sell.
The item in question is my 2001 American Series Strat. I bought it used a few years ago. I only have 2 "Fender" guitars, this and my Tele. the rest of my electrics are Squiers.
I always said if I had to sell a guitar, it would be this one. I haven't played it a whole lot over the last few years (or any guitar for that matter) as I have 2 children under three that demand the majority of my attention.
The sale would take care of a couple of large bills and get me back to a manageable place, but I may regret it once I see someone else carry it away.
I'm not sure what to do?

Given the circumstances you describe, I think we both know there's only one answer... sell it.

There will always be other Strats to buy, but a family man has different priorities than the rest of us.

Things will come full circle and you'll be enjoying a new Strat in no time.

cheers!

I have been in that same situation multiple times and it is never easy. The fact you say that you don't play that strat much pretty much confirms what you are thinking you need to do.Family always comes first in my household. You do have other guitars you can play and you can always get another american strat. If it will put you in a better place than you should go for it.It will suck to see it go ...but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.If it was a guitar that you couldn't replace or had sentimetal value than it would be a tough decision. Can you borrow a few hundred bucks from a good friend to get you by? I feel for you bro.....You will make the right decision.Best of luck and I hope things turn around for you

Unless you find a buyer, you'll have to take it to a guitar store, where they'll give you about $400. for it. I'd sell 2 or 3 Squier's, before I'd sell the American Series, if anything at all.

I think a better option would be to pawn your Squiers for a few months.

Even better than that...go to a temp service for work. Let the bills wait..they're just bills. You do have food on the table, right?

I think a part of it depends on the gear. Some gear is easily replaceable.
Example: MIM or MIA Standard Strat in 3 colour burst. Very common. Easily replaceable.
Other colours or configs are not as easily replaceable. Some are almost impossible.

It mostly depends on how dire your situation is.
Consider .... You sell a guitar and that pays the water and gas bills for what? A month if it's a MIM, maybe two if it's a MIA? Then you're still in the same boat but without a guitar. Then when it's time to buy a guitar again the prices have gone up. IMO, selling gear to pay bills is an option only when you're absolutely desperate and the wolf is actually at the door trying to break it down.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think I would rather sell the Strat than the Squiers. One was a gift from my wife (Jagmaster), I love my J Mascis Jazzmaster and my Tele Custom II is only worth $150 or so, so not worth it to sell.
I will NEVER sell my Fender Tele. We've been through far to much to let that one go! The strat, as much as I like it, and as awesome as it sounds through my Traynor amp is the one I'll have to sacrifice.
I ALWAYS make sure there is food! I'd never pay a bill before I feed my family.
I won't sell it at a shop. I'd never get what I want for it. I posted it on my local classifieds. We'll see if there are any takers.

When I bought it, the saleman (Long & McQuade) told me that the color Hot Rod Red was discontinued and it would be a more rare color. Not sure if thats true or not.

Sell there will always be guitars. You gotta do what's right for you're family. They always come first.

You can still enjoy music on your Squiers. I would sell every guitar but one for my family if the situation called for it.

Yep. Do whatcha gotta do, Yoda. as much as it sucks, it's what needs to be done. I regret letting a few guitars get away from me in the past, as well as some antique cars I had... but I don't EVER regret keeping my family fed, clothed, and sheltered.
and don't take less than you need to for it.... that's the part you'll really regret later. i should know... :|

Never sold a guitar, too hard to find one I really bond with and when I get them I keep them. In harder times, I've sold amps though. I still have regrets. So later on in hard times I just did odd jobs and played out to make some extra cash.

Last night I told my wife I put the strat on the local classifieds. She asked why and told me not to sell it. How about that!
