For those of you in the know, Bend, OR is a hotspot for microbrews these days. Four of us decided to up the ante on the typical Cascade Ale Trail beer tour and visit all 11 breweries in town, sampling every house brewed beer they had on tap (no guest taps)... it was quite an event. We began at noon and sampled 109 beers over roughly 12 hours...

The hands down winner was Tough Love Imperial Stout brewed by Crux Fermentation Project. It is perhaps the best beer I have ever drank... period. All of their beers were well above average with many being exemplary examples of the style. Other stellar brews were served up by Boneyard, 10 Barrel, Silver Moon, Deschutes, Worthy, Goodlife, and BBC.

The biggest loser... Cascade Lakes and Brew Werks (the worst beers of the day... and they were bad!) and McMenimans, most beers were well below average though the Ruby was a pleasant surprise, however, the service was terrible.

If anyone is looking for a beer vacation in an outdoor oriented city. look no further than Bend, OR. Cheers.

I wish I could have 109 beers to myself.

I'd be good for a night.

Well... they were sample glasses, anywhere from 4-6 oz a piece. We did the math (with 5 oz average) and it figured out to be roughly 11 pints. We drank lots of water too or it may not have been possible. :)

I'd smoke an 8th dutch and kill myself with liquid kindness.

That's awesome!

I'm from Wisconsin and spent a few years giving brewery tours at a place called Lakefront Brewery (http://www.lakefrontbrewery.com). If you're in the midwest ever, check it out. We're rated one of the best tours in the country.

There's a tour coming out of Michigan (clearly the best place for craft beer right now) that takes people to Bells, Founders, Dark Horse, Jolly Pumpkin and a few others. Michigan is really and truly doing great things for beer and the industry.

I'd also throw out there that Great Lakes Brewery in Ohio and Three Floyds in Indiana are probably kicking some of the most $@! in those states.

I love in Kansas right now and am really into Tallgrass , which is out of Manhattan.

There is a micro-brewery in the Distillery District in Toronto called Mill Street Brewery. It's also a restaurant. They make many fine beers, but my current favourite is Mill Street Stock Ale.

Well out of the way, but selling world-wide is this excellent "Homage" to the great Sierra Nevada, brewed right next to Bon Scott's statue (ironically?). Well worth at try if you see it locally.

Funny you should mention guitars... the mastermind behind organizing our day of debauchery was Jason Bowerman, formerly of Breedlove guitars and now making his own handmade mandos and guitars... they're amazing instruments!

If you ever get to Lawrence KS (about 30 min. West of KC on I-70), there's a great restaurant/microbrewery called the Free State Brewing Co. . Their beer is great and their food excellent. They make all their own breads and use the same yeasts to bake that they brew with.

Lawrence, KS is the home of the University of Kansas and it's a cute college town with lots of interesting restaurants and clubs.

cheers!

Sounds like a good time, but there's no way I could sample that many beers.

I'm not a beer drinker at all... never was. Even in college, I'd be the guy at the party with a bottle of Vodka and a gal. of Orange Juice. I might drink 4-5 beers a year.

Now there are 2 exceptions... OB Beer from Korea and Trappist Ales from Belgium, specifically Chimay Ale (Cing Cent). I have visited the Notre-Dame de Scourmont Abbey in Chimay Belgium and toured their operation where they also produce amazing cheeses and breads.

Back in the early 80's I ran a very high-end executive conference center outside Chicago (Lake Bluff) and Chimay's original Distributor (Paterno) was also located in Lake Bluff, just down the street. At that time, their distribution was limited to IL and so no one knew of it. Lou Paterno asked me to carry it in our Lounge and made sure I had plenty of samples cases for myself. But, it's really the only beer/ale I drink and I love it.

Microbrews are all the rage right now and there are some good ones. But my experience is that there an awful lot of really bad ones just riding the popular wave, perhaps even the majority. We have about 5 microbreweries here in MSP and there isn't one I'd rate higher than stale swampwater.

We are also home to the only Sake micro-brewery outside Japan - Moto-I. Their Sakes are some of the best I've ever tasted. They also serve excellent food and have a rooftop patio with a spectacular view of the Minneapolis Skyline.

cheers!

Funny you should say that - that's where I live and where I work (KU)! I've done Free State and have been into the Copperhead lately. Good stuff. Their food is pretty fantastic. 715 is another great spot for drinks. Been to the Yardhouse at the Legends a few times as well. There's an awesome place in KC called Beer Kitchen - great good, amazing beer and a real great lakes feel.
