All the bands that I like use basic power chords to make music. I personally prefer the sound of power chords to full chords, they sound better with distortion. But would you say using just power chords and scales and hammer ons and such makes me crappy?

I don't think it does, I mean look at the greats who did it...

Johnny Ramone for one!

Power chords are basically just the fifths of notes. Easy to play, and they sound cool.

If using power chords works for you then by all means use them.

I mean its like I've been playing power chords for as long as I've started. I guess it's become my style in a way

Its not what you do, but how you do it. Power chords by themselves do not make you crap, just like full chords do not make you good. I have a friend who loves powerchords and triads and he sounds absolutely incredible jamming away (the fastest rhythm guitarist I've ever seen)

I dont think it makes you crappy but I hope thats not all you can play. I like to play some Metalica from time to time which requires "Power Chords" But more often than not I like the sound of a full chord. But hey every chord and note has its place and all that really matters is you play what inspires you and makes you happy.

Who cares what other people think of your playing and techniques. If it sounds good, use them.

Power chords are a good way to keep your sound clean while sticking to the same notes.

Most of the time electrics (especially with humbuckers) sound pretty crappy when you strum full chords.

I also have a question about soloing...can anyone give me some tips on how to work on jumping from string to string fast?

Power chords in the right songs will sound great.

In the wrong songs, not.
