Just some thoughts and a thankyou. I joined the forum shortly after getting my new SCXD from an online dealer 12/11. My first Fender amp at age 54. I asked a question about foot swich compatibility with another amp I owned at the time. The answers were quick and to the point. I knew then I joined a great community. About 5 or so months later I sold it when I got a blonde X2 with the correct FSW. Since then I daily check the forum to learn what I can. Sometimes it goes over my head but with the help of many of the top posters I'm slowly learning. Can't wait to build my own tube amp combo. At my age I like the idea of a grab and go setup.

Just some backstory I try to go every Wednesday come hell or high water to a jam session with friends who play out about town and at weddings. They all play well and the covers are tight. I've played once a week with them for about two hours off and on for the last five years. Other than that I might go weeks without picking up a guitar. As the lead guitar player said early on “if you don't know the song just turn down, strum, and smile”

Fast forward to two weeks ago after the weekly jam. The band was discussing the up coming wedding gig and when to move the equipment. I offered up my truck to help. To which they replied do you want to play the gig. The lead guitar player/frontman was going to be off celebrating his 50th and would not be available.

Long story short - We played out doors to about 100 plus folks. Mind you these were people I saw around town from time to time for the past 13 years since I've lived in the area. The question asked of me was “I didn't know you knew the bride and groom?” To which I responded “I'm with the band....trying to fill in for the lead guitar player....and I've never really played in front of people”

As I packed up after a few long sets my band mates told my I rocked. They kept telling me I played well and lead licks were great. The drummer who also played my acoustic guitar, and was on lead vocals came over and thanked me. He then told me that he never heard me play like that before. Adding he new I had it in me all along.

I apologize for the long winded post, but I had to tell somebody my little story. :D
Thanks
Mike

Great story, Mike!

And congrats on being able to fulfill your aspirations. One more check-off on your "bucket list".

Rawk on!

Great story Mike. Way to go. Word will get out and you may end up with a steady gig before you know it. :D

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

great story mike.

a few years back I reconnected with a grade school friend of mine who played with me in a few bands. we talked for a while, and he invited me to one of his current bands' gigs, and the guys allowed me to jam with them for a few songs. what a treat :D keep in mind that I have not played in front of people since about 1977, and with no rehearsel.

it went so well that I get to fill in when one of the guitar players can't make it. next gig august 1st.

hope you keep having fun with it

Nice Mike! Never underestimate yourself. An older Blues guitarist I know told me you can play anything you want as long as you play it with authority. Always try to be confident and you'll always rock!!
Congrats!!

That's a great story and it only goes to show that we musicians are usually our own harshest critics and are usually much better than we give ourselves credit for.No matter how good one may be,he/she is usually never satisfied with their own level of proficiency. It's the feedback of others that give us an honest idea of our level of competency.
