Seagull is a very good choice. It's a quality instrument at a good price. For $500.00 or $600.00 you can get an all-solid wood Canadian made guitar. Terrific sounding, well constructed.

Collings are my favorite acoustic but they do cost! Friend has one with Adirondake spruce top and rosewood back an sides, mahogany neck plays, like a dream. 8)

Update:
Almost a month later in the Acoustic Quest and I was ready to pull the trigger on the Martin D-15M but when I went to the store she was gone. SOLD.

Without missing a beat, the eager beaver salesman tells me that he has "something even better" . The Martin D-17M.

I gave it a go and there's no doubt that the D-17M plays and sounds great. If memory serves I think it's a little brighter than the D-15M but I just couldn't get beyond the mix of a high gloss finish on the top with a satin finish for the sides and back. I like a high gloss finish and I also like the natural look but not both on one guitar. The D-17M is also about 300 clams more than the D-15M and I'm wondering if this is because of the finish.

    Anyhow, ... the quest continues ... 8)

    Cheers!
    BM

Indeed, and I'm sure the same is true of all great quests involving guitars. :D

My search for a Martin D-15M has yielded some other possible contenders:

I checked all the entries on the spec sheet one by one and it would appear that the two models are identical but this doesn't make much sense. I read on another forum that the 000- is longer than the 00- model but this spec is not listed on the Martin site. In any case I got a chance to play the D-15M and the 000-15M side by side. Obviously the dreadnought model is louder with a rich bass but I really like the feel and look of the 000-15M. ... And no, I'm not getting both.

Now just to complicate and confuse things even further, here are a couple of other models from the Fender/Guild side:

    Cheers!

Epilogue: After going back and forth then forth and back, I finally pulled the trigger on the little Martin 00-15M. :D

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

Cheers!

Kewl!!
Congrats on finding your guitar!
Mahogany, huh?
I bet it's nice and warm sounding.
Just to state my preference one more time  I'm happy to see you ended up not buying a dreadnought.
Live large, enjoy and play it with gusto!

Thanks BMW-KTM! You're right. It's very warm sounding.

I was going back and forth between the D-15M and the 00-15M and felt like a kid in an ice cream parlor trying to make up his mind. They're both great but also two very different guitars with distinct roles.

On a personal note, the mahogany has a special significance for me. My uncle used to have an all-mahogany guitar and some of my fondest childhood memories are of him showing me how to play. I don't know if it was a Martin but it was probably a dreadnought which to my then small hands seemed huge. He passed away a few years ago and I don't know what happened to that guitar but I still remember the first lick he taught me. I was an intro but I don't think he ever got as far as teaching me the rest of the song.

Curiously what has made these memories more vivid is not so much the sound of the instrument but rather the satin look and especially the scent of the mahogany.

Cheers!

Congrats! Beautiful Guitar. If you have the funds left over, take a look at the Martin Owners Club. It's something like $45 a year and they send you some pretty cool stuff. I received a nice bag, strings, a really nice mug, invitations to special events and a magazine that comes out a couple times a year. I'm not far from Nazareth, Pa and I go there a few times a year, look at the Martin Museum, take a tour and they have a shop around the corner where you can get guitar parts. It's stuff that Martin rejects for one reason or another, but I use the parts fro cigar box guitars and it's really cheap. You can get tops, backs, sides necks, fingerboards etc.

I'm partial to smaller body guitars and have a Martin Performing Artist OMCPA4 Orchestra Model.
Really nice guitar and cuts like a knife in an acoustic mix. I have Dreadnoughts, but like the OM better.

Good luck and have fun with it.
