Hey guys, I'm hoping I can get some help here . As most of you know, I got a Fender Studio 85 several days ago. It sounds great and everything but , yesterday I bought it to band practice for the very first time and I really had to crank it up to around 3 or so, on each channel just to be heard . I used to have a Fender Frontman 65R which is the same wattage ( 65 watts ) and I only used to have to put that at between 1-2 to be heard with my old band . Now I'm thinking that since this amp was made in 1988 or so, could it be that the stock speaker is probably worn with age and should be replaced ? The reason why I'm asking that is, it doesn't sound like it's breaking up and is very clear but it doesn't IMO, have the punch that Fender amps are known for. At least when I'm using it in a band situation. It's 65 watts and IMO, should be putting out the sound when being used with a band.

I'd disconnect the stock speaker and pop the amp on top of a Marshall 4X12 cab and see how that sounds. Then take appropriate action.

Volume dials are only a reference point. Even though the wattage is the same, the volume may not sound the same from amp model to amp model. Just turn it up. My old Vibrolux Reverb and Bandmaster were forty watts and so was my Hrdlx. The Hrdlx hit full tilt around four the others around seven or eight. The volume was easier to control on my older amps.

I was considering that as well . The gain channel on my amp, has a boost switch which makes it much louder, but the clean channel really doesn't hit it's stride with my band until I put the volume at 3. Plus I'm running the amp through our PA through the line out imput on the amp as well. I still might upgrade the stock speaker to a Eminence . My B-days coming up at the end of this month and I'll see if my wife is willing to buy me one.

Same power output do not mean same DB or output sound level .

Just looking shematic and those amps have two completely different desing . Frontman use Transistors and Studio use Integrated circuits.

IMO transistors in Frontman amp could deliver more output sound level.

Best thing to do try another speaker , try Frontman speaker with Studio amp.

What you said makes absolute perfect sense . I am now very relieved after seeing this. You have definitely made my day and thank you for the help.

All guitar amplifiers, whether solid state ot tube, can be run at full tilt boogie. You won't hurt it. Turn it up to where you like it and forget about the dials. If the amp gets too crunchy at a volume that you like or need then you prolly need a different amp. If you ever run across a guitar amp that can't be dimed then you just found yourself an amp that brings a whole new meaning to the term P.O.S.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Very interesting video even though if his amp is all tube. After watching it, I went and did some fiddling around with my settings and ended up cranking my mid all the way up to 10. That alone , made for a major increase in the volume . I think I'm pretty much all set now .

A lot of player dump the mids. Funny thing is, if you cut the mids, you get no cut in the mix.

I didn't cut the mids, I ended up turning it all the way to 10. I have the Treble at 7 , the Bass at 7, and the Reverb at 4 . That alone , has made a major increase in the amp's volume where if I play it at home by myself, I can't even have either channel at 1 now, which is what I was looking for. So now, I know it'll definitely hold up with my band. I did by the way, get my new footswitch in yesterday for it, which works well.

Funny how that works. A lot of players read how there guitar hero's get their tone and try to set their controls the same way. It never works, there's too many variables involved. But the mid and presence controls are often neglected. You learned the secret of cutting a mix, it goes a long way.
