well ivehad fenders epis rics gretsch. etc. all round best guitar ive ever played was a hagstrom. an old solid body hagstrom 3. i still have it. feels like an sg but has single coils. and its own uniqe sound. thing is inmy opinion the neck is the most important part of the guitar. and ithink hagstrom made the best necks in the business.

dont know about the new ones bit the old hagstrom necks. you dont get any of the seasonal movement from cold heat or humidity. i also had the 12 string version of this and i can tell you the action can be set very low with nobuzzing at all and the neck stays where you set it. i see them on ebay . i bought mine used at guitar center in connetticut for a good price. . no matter how long it sits inthe case or on a stand. i just pick it up and play.

the thing with single coils is you can get alot of noise from near by electronics.. had that problem with my mim strat and telecaster. so i went to noiseless pickups.

I've seen some faded SG guitars and basses that had mis-cut bodies, bad cut contours..etc.

I'd hold out for a bit and try to find an American Standard used, if I were in your shoes.

Really? I'm not brand loyal in the least I have about a dozen guitars and they're a bunch of different manufacturers so the fanboy or in my case fanman thing is out the window. I've never seen anything remotely like you're suggesting. I have a Sam Ash within walking distance to my home, a Georges Music a few miles in one direction and and a Guitar Center in another. I'm in these stores every week and I don't see what you're talking about. I can't stand the whole blanket statement thing. I've seen poorly cut nuts on just about every guitar from time to time, I've seen fret sprouting on Fender Road Worn series for a while, but that seemed to have stopped, but your statement makes me chuckle. Do you measure them against factory specs or do you just hate Gibson Faded guitars in general? Just curious.

with 550 bucks, you can get 2 guitars!!!!! Really, I would check the local gc for sales on fender as well as the used guitar room. If you work it right you could pick up a nice used strat or tele or both depending. craigs list is also another great idea as one member posted.

But as another posted, make sure you try out a few!!!! YOU MAY FIND YOU LIKE AN IBANEZ MORE

Happy hunting!!

I have an old Ibanez AS73 that I bought used that has Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pups in it that sounds and plays really well. I'm thinking about making it a bit more 335 like with some Gibson 57 Classics and some better controls. The quality of the guitar is pretty nice. People are amazed at closer look at what it is.

Knowing your proclivity for Stones-y music, a Strat (Ronnie Wood's weapon of choice) or Tele (Keef!!) would definitely be a great choice...a Tele would probably be better, overall, considering the ease of modification.

My MIM Tele is my "first-grab, used 75% of the time" axe for performing, recording and composing--especially for open tunings and slide. Almost everybody who plays it, likes it.

Having said that, my MIA 62RI Strat is an amazing instrument, so go to a big box store and play everything you can put your fingers on and then start the eBay and CL search.

One word of caution--make sure the seller (if eBay) allows returns...a guitar may look awesome, sound good, etc, but ultimately have a serious issue that makes it a bad choice for you.

I saw...well, what I saw, bub. There's one on talkass, for at least one reference. Maybe it was photoshopped.

I'm becoming more and more interested in Teles and Strats. I realized that if I spend $550 on a Gibson I will get a bottom of the barrel, stripped down guitar. If I spend $550 on a Mexican Fender guitar, I will get one that is loaded with all the features I need. Now I just need to chose between a Tele or Strat....

Either way you get what you pay for. In that scenario, I'd go with a Tele. The problem I found with a lot of the MIM Strats is the tremolo isn't up to snuff. I replaced my original worn out 72 Strat's trem with a Super Vee Blade Runner. Best $150 I ever spent. I still saved the original.
All said and done, I'd save a little more and get a used MIA version. You'll get better pickups and hardware and it will save you from upgrading in the future.

If I could spend my money the way I wanted to I would've had a Gibson SG Standard by now. My parents won't let me spend $1000 on a guitar because it's $1000, even if it's my own money.

It's gonna be that way for me, for a while..too. No car..no phone. Just bass! It's all good.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction concerning amplification, Fender Lounge.
