I like the brown pickguard - I think the anodized bit provides a cool texture (got a Bass with one). I think that makes it even more unique. I really want that Surf Green one (though the Sonic Blue Tele is pretty mean too).

I agree with you GoRoryGo but there's some people who post here who like to complain & find the short comings in things rather that just say ...(as an example)...Hey that's a cool looking guitar with a cool brown pick guard.... guess it makes them feel superior... :(

I like the pickguard on all of them, looks like it gives it more character. I don't think I would shell out the money for these new, but would love to pick up the surf green strat used at some point for the right price.

Fender wanted a 'rustic' theme with the wood grain, complementary colors. and the brown pickguard, not a modern theme. They nailed it.

The Rustic Ash Tele looks like Roy Rogers should be playing it. So much so, that I am going to refer to the Rustic Strats/Teles as 'Roy Rogers' models.

A wooden pickguard better matches the rustic theme than the murky brown anodized.

& probably costs more too,......I'll take a plastic pick guard over a wooded pick guard any day,...... a wooded pick guard would get thrashed.. I'm with "seismic" I think Fender nailed it with the brown pick guard..

The brown anodized pickguard doesn't suit everyone's taste, IMO; some like it, others didn't.

But it would be more fancy with some custom work. :P Plain anodized is not enough attractive.

These babies look incredible and would look even better in my music room-the Olympic White Strat looks rich but I'd like to see the Strat in Sonic Blue too.Ash is a beautifully grained wood and these faded paint applications really bring the grain out in a very striking manner-1000 times nicer than any relic job could ever hope to be.A black pearloid, marble motif or even a mirrored pickguard would look much better than the brown aluminum would and that would be the only thing that I'd do to change it if I bought one.

I once went with a wood-looking pickguard

Image

But it was faux (plastic) and it wore funny (it was black under the faux woodgrain), so I went to white.

Pearls of wisdom,...... & if I may add one more thing it's that Fender does product testing before they release a product to market,....( as do all corporations)..... So I think they know what their doing,...at least in recent years ...anyway.
The pick guard is a none issue, if you don't like the pickguard all you have to do when you buy the guitar is swap out the stock pickguard with your favorite after market pickguard,........voila problem solved.

@James: I don't know that I share your confidence regarding the nature of the company's preparation before bringing a product to market. I am not familiar with any 'test marketing' on their part ever. They've certainly had some dogs in their day and some hot LTD's which we wish they had continue to run. These Forums could not have been a better sounding board for them as to what their customer base might go with. Some gear has, on occasion, trickled down from the Custom Shop wherein imagination and creativity are encouraged. I've always had my reservations about gear for which one would be dropping top dollar and then having go to aftermarket product to 'make it just right'. It would be far better for the consumer to vote with their feet and not purchase a product which is not precisely what they want. There's also some confusion between the guitar Brad shows in his post and what is described in the products section. [ A one piece rock maple neck would be my choice on that white body but it does not appear to be an option in the products section. I might have gone with an anodized gold scratchplate as well. ] Sluggish sales are certainly a better indicator of level of acceptance when evaluating a production run and looking ahead to the future.

I agree Fender has had some dogs they've also gotten rid of product that I & many thought were great !!.......I also agree that the Forum is a good sounding board with regard to what people like & don't like.
