Brian Jones, founder and multi-instrumentalist of The Rolling Stones, died on this day in 1969. The cause of death was drowning.

Brian played rhythm guitar, sitar, harmonica, maracas, piano, recorder, and a countless number of other unique instruments. He was very talented and helped the band produce sounds that were never heard before in Western music.

Brian is my favorite guitar player, actually, partly because he inspired me to play guitar. He also influenced my hairstyle, which didn't turn out as well as the guitar playing.

Thank you, Brian, for making great music with the Stones and thank you for also changing my life. You will always be missed.

RIP

I remember hearing of his passing on that day in 1969. I was stunned. He was an exceptional musician. A sad day for sure.

Wonder how the Stones would have been had he not died.

+1...I think you nailed that one Tbazz! And as Brian was really a good Lead Guitarist and that was his primary roll in the Stones, he and Mick would have really sounded great together!

Brian played rhythm guitar and Keith played lead.

I don't think "Paint it Black" would have been the same without Brian Jones.

When Mick and Keef usurped Brian's leadership of the group with their insidious plan to wrench control from him,can be traced back as far as when Brian was holding auditions for his new band in the backrooms of a London nightclub.Mick and Keef showed up for the audition and Brian told Keef that he was in however Mick didn't make a favourable impression on him and Brian more or less bid him goodbye.Richards stood by his friend and said that they were a package and that if Mick wasn't in then he was out too.Brian grudgingly let Jagger in and consequently Mick held that grudge all these years.

Brian's spiral into substance abuse started when it became obvious to him that the group was no longer his baby and that Jagger and Richards had succeeded with their plot.At the time of his death Brian was in the best spirits that he had been in for years, as he and a few good friends were getting ready to start a project to bring to the world the music of virtuoso musicians who played other genres of music from all corners of the earth.

Over the years I have read books and articles about Brian's death and have seen or read interviews of those who were closest to Brian, such as Noel Redding,Denny Laine,Alexis Korner and Andrew Loog-Oldham..All of whom attended Brian's "Tribute Concert" that took place in Hyde Park with Mick Taylor in Brian's usual place. All of them were appalled by the hypocrisy of it all, especially Jagger's maudlin reading of Shelley's "Adonais" and the release of hundreds of butterflies.

There have been many accusations made since Brian's death and much speculation about the true cause .There was a supposed deathbed confession by Frank Thorogood,Brian's lay-about groundskeeper, where he stated that he in fact had drowned Brian, however he died before the single person who heard him could get a witness to verify the statement. Many of those close to Brian, to this day insist that there was definitely something underhanded to Brian's death yet several attempts to have a commission of inquiry into it have been vanquished.

Biographer Laura Jackson has written the most comprehensive biography of Brian's life-and death-that I have read.Jackson did exhaustive research into Brian's life and interviewed many who were either close friends or family of Brian.Besides bringing together just about everything that was true about Brian that I had read before, she unearths a lot of information from other sources who surprisingly never interviewed by the police, coroner etc. Her book is called "Brian Jones-The untold life and mysterious death of a rock legend" and is a "Must Read" for anyone who is a fan of Brian.

Brian was the most musically inclined of the Stones and it is largely due to his input that a lot of their songs weren't a complete flop.Brian would often take a lacklustre song and change the beat, instrumentation etc. and consequently turn the song into a surefire hit.Brian had an innate knack for learning to master any instrument in very little time and instinctively knew what songs would sound better with which instrument. As far as I'm concerned the Stones only did 2 albums of any merit after Brian died and they are:"Goats Head Soup" and "Sticky Fingers".Brian was the consummate musician as he lived for music and it was the love of his life.It was Brian who showed Keef most of his blues riffs that Richards credits himself for picking out on his own.He was an integral part of the Stones and his passing left a void that nobody else could ever fill because he was not only a great instrumentalist he was also adept at knowing what would make song work.He was my favourite Stone and it's because of him that the Gibson Firebird VII (along with a '54 or "L" series Strat)are my "Holy Grail" guitars.I have an Epi Firebird V and a Vox Mk. VI acoustic that along with my Vox AC-15 can get me close to his tone.As Noel Redding so aptly put it "Without Brian Jones, there would be no Rolling Stones." Happy Birthday Brian, there are still millions who love you for what you were and not who you were. You'll always be an inspiration to other musicians because of your undying love of music and your standards of excellence when it came to playing music.
