The "Star Wars" soundtrack, performed by John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra, was probably the first album of orchestral music I was ever exposed to (I was two or three years-old when it came out), and remains among my favorites.

As far as rock/pop soundtracks are concerned, it's hard to top "Singles" (featuring original songs from Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, The Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc., along with a great cover of Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart).

There is a Treasure Trove of GREAT Music from Hollywood... tough to narrow it down to one.

But I'd have to say Italian composer Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission (1986) starring Robert Deniro & Jeremy Irons.

The score was hauntingly beautiful with it's Andean Pan Flute and it fit the movie perfectly - the music drove the movie.

It was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Herbie Hancock ('Round Midnight).

It did win the Golden Globe for Best Musical Score and the New York Film Critics Award for Best Musical Score.

Morricone also did the scores for the movies The Untouchables, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (which everybody knows and is iconic), A Fistful of Dollars, Inglorious Basterds, Once Upon a Time in America, Wolf, In the Line of Fire, Bugsy, The Professional, Casualties of War, and others.

He was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 2007.

cheers!

The "Forrest Gump" soundtrack is full of (mostly) vintage correct hit songs and more of a compilation than an actual film score. So is "The Big Chill" and other films which harvest evergreens, golden oldies, etc. That can be a far more expensive proposition than an original score since clearance can cost many thousands and must be obtained on a per song basis.

In the harvesting of evergreens for incorporation into a film two names stand out as demonstrating they would have made great radio "program directors" in an alternate universe. #1 is Quentin Tarantino and #2 is Martin Scorsese. Yes, Robert Zemeckis' work on "Forrest Gump" is good, but he's third place behind those two guys in my book. "FG" is a good soundtrack compilation but it was sort of like carpet bombing in that it dropped so many songs into the film that one or two were bound to land in the right place. Tarantino and Scorsese are much more judiciously precise in their harvesting.

That being said, I think the real test of a good score to me is that you can hum the theme song. While Tarantino, Scorsese and Zemeckis make good films, right off the top of my head I can't hum an original theme to any of their films.

Brotherdave...I can wholeheartedly agree with what your saying about movie scores. It takes way more to write music that tells the story, than plug in songs that fit the moment. I was only going by the op's original question favorite movie theme/soundtrack. Original scores deservedly should get a thread all it's own! Godfather would be way on top of that list.

Guys, thanks for picking up on what I actually meant to ask, although I was intrigued by everybody's responses. I really was trying to focus on original music composed for the film rather than greatest hits plug-ins, and I should have added that no movies about music were to be considered. Otherwise, there are plenty of music movies and concert films which would qualify! Among those, Woodstock would be a classic, and I liked Detroit Rock City, but for nostalgic reasons I would have voted for The Beatles Help!. I was twelve years old when that movie opened, and since it wasn't playing at any theater in my neighborhood I rode the bus all the way into downtown Los Angeles, got there in time for the first Saturday morning showing, and proceeded to watch the feature film three times, with the second feature and cartoons and coming attractions interspersed between! It was after dark when I finally left the theater and took the bus home.

Arnold, you should start that thread about original movie scores, from your cloud of eider down! :D
