The thread about musicians in movies got me to thinking about movies and music, period, and which songs, themes, or soundtracks really made an impression on me. I was tempted to respond in the "first song played for your significant other" thread, but that would have amounted to hijacking...

"Secret Agent Man" is indeed iconic, but I can't think of a piece of movie music that is still being used after fifty years (!) that measures up to the James Bond Theme, which is a real kick to play on guitar for people if you're feeling nostalgic and want to crank up the reverb. I love it! This piece is so well known to fans that when the original recording blasted from the speakers at a critical moment in 007's latest, Skyfall, the theater audience erupted in cheers and catcalls. Actually, since the various Bond movies have contributed so much to the popular music landscape, with songs like "Goldfinger", "Live And Let Die", "For Your Eyes Only", "All Time High", and even Madonna's underrated "Die Another Day", it's saying a lot that Adele's "Skyfall" ranks right up there with the best. Since movie music is meant to dovetail with what's happening onscreen, it's best to hear most of it in its visual context. Here are just a few more of my choices:

--John Barry's "Star Wars" theme, 'nuff said. Also his soundtrack for the original Superman, which is terrific
--Elmer Bernstein's theme from The Magnificent Seven, bound to make your heart beat faster and want to jump on a horse and ride :D
--"Claudia's Theme", from Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, played on classical guitar and just lovely

Opinions?

Goooooolllllllldddddd Finguhhhh!!!! :P

There was a session musician named Jimmy Page that played guitar on that track. Perhaps you may have heard of him. Heh

It's funny that this topic was brought up. I watched this film not too long ago called: The Golden Age Of Film Music: 1965-1975. It was on the Cinémoi channel (if you have DirecTV, I guess) and it was a documentary about a lot of this. They're playing it again on July 14th, at 9:00 P.M. EST, if you have that channel and are interested in watching it.

"STAR WARS" and the James Bond films are probably the most iconic. That Bond theme is so durable.

KUDOS to the post citing "Blackboard Jungle." I was thinking the exact same thing! A groundbreaking film.

I kinda like the tasty acoustic work Nuno Bettencourt did for the soundtrack for the movie Smart People.

Into the wild.

That soundtrack and movie made me actually realise that there is still some beauty in this world.

I'm going to seperate these....

Soundtrack: Grosse Point Blank. The specials, violent femmes, the clash, sixousee and the banshees....just so much awesome.

Theme: it's no contest. Jurassic Park.
