Post the best cover version of any song and the worst cover you've heard.

Just to be even handed heres 2 by the same artist.

Though all credit to Joe Jackson on the last one.

This is a really good question.

Best Cover. SRV - Little Wing. Whatever, feel free to judge and disagree.

Worst Cover. Ever. Miley Cyrus - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Rolling Stone was correct in saying this was the worst cover of all time. I don't like the song to begin with (never got into Nirvana, aside from Bleach), so when she does it...well, it's like taking a big #2 on my youth.

SRV does excellent version , just love the Corrs version though

Funnily enough just saw the Tori Amos Teen Spirit vid which may even top Miley Cyrus for bad. It's just totally the wrong material for her style.

IMO best covers of teen spirit are by Patti Smith or the ultimate version.....

@Gigasfrank What can I say about Comfortably Numb- Attempting a Bee Gees/Floyd fusion and lacking the musicality of either!

Sean Lennon,Rufus Wainwright and another singer that I don't know the name of,did an unbelievable cover of John's "This Boy".Sean does an awe inspiring job of the vocals with the same pained angst that John used and even hits the high note in the chorus with all the passion that John did and his voice never wavered once.Definite goosebump material.

Rufus Wainwright's cover of John's "Across The Universe" from the "I am Sam" soundtrack album is also fabulous.

Concrete Blonde's cover of Andy Prieboy's "Tomorrow Wendy" is absolutely deadly, Johnette Nepolitano does an amazing job on the song.Ansy must have been impressed with her cover of it too because he got her to do the harmony vocals on it on his "Upon My Wicked Son" album.

As far as bad covers go,UB-40 makes an absolute balls of any song they cover, they slaughtered Neil Diamond's "Red,Red Wine" so much that I have to dive for the radio and change stations before they finish the first line.

Anne Murray has also done more than her share of defacing songs especially with her cover of The Beatle's "You Won't See Me" and "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees. There ought to be a law that forbids certain people or groups from doing covers, especially of hits that have achieved almost iconic status.Anne Murray has a "King Midas In Reverse" thing going on, to quote an old song by the Hollies-everything that she touches turns to shite.

BTW: I had to edit this because I didn't notice the "King Midas In Reverse" phrase missing which left people wondering what I was talking about.

The Kingsmen's(Jack Ely's) version of "Louie, Louie" has to be the greatest of covered songs.

Two songs tie my list for the number one best cover......

"Summertime Blues" -- The Who (from "Live At Leeds")

"Keep Me Hangin' On" -- Vanilla Fudge (from their debut album)

My worst cover award goes to anybody's version of "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, etc). Especially egregious, playing Ms Parton's sonically-meandering rendition for the detainees at Gitmo would be a violation of both the Hague and Geneva Conventions.

I think I'll stick to Beatles covers-

Best-
Zoot. This seminal Australian band featured future members of the Little River Band and also Rick Springfield on guitar. I love this version of Eleanour Rigby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... ptr7i7sFkM

Worst-
John Farnham. Another Aussie legend (apparently). Our version of M Bolton. This is one of John's biggest hits. I find it excrutiating, but millions of soccer mums would disagree. Help ...indeed.
