I always had a dream of working for a guitar company. I've been a custom woodworker for 25-years. But I've never really built a guitar from scratch. I'm probably a while away from that point. I have all the confidence in the world that I can, but my job is demanding and I don't mess with woodwork once the day is done.

As odd as it sounds, I've never built anything for myself. Not even one cabinet or shelf. And I've built thousands of them. I'm in the middle of building a whole bar for a restaurant right now. But my own stuff.. All bought. When my work day is done, I'm done with woodwork.

It's pretty crazy when I think about it.

I'm sure I'll build one some day before I kick the bucket, but I don't see it happening any time soon. If I were to work for Fender, I'd want it to be in the field if woodwork. Problem is, I've never dabbled into the actual woodwork of building a guitar yet. So my resume wouldn't be of much interest to them I'm sure.

I turned down a job as PRS a while back because it was just to far to drive. Crossing the Bay Bridge to and from the eastern shore can take hours sometimes! After thought I declined. Job was for machine maintenance and set up.

PRS guitars have a unique ring and can scream through a dual rectifier or marshall. Driving is a killer, I know for sure, it almost got me. It would have been a cool gig but you are more important cv.

I don't mind driving, in fact I enjoy it. I find it de-stressing. Heavy traffic on the otherhand.. :(

There are actually a ton of openings currently. Check 'em out here. Believe it or not, I found my own role (14 years ago) ... posted right here on Fender.com!

Since this thread got revived, I might as well observe that we actually have a ton of great openings posted currently including two spots on my own team here in Scottsdale. Check out our Careers section!

Too bad I'm old, retired and not looking. I would definitely go for the Finance/Accounting job in Scottsdale. Forty years of doing that kind of stuff in O&G. No difference. It's still just numbers. :)

A retirement job at Fender would be ideal. Other than that, "knock, knock, knock'n on heaven's door" would be great. Keeping fingers crossed you'll get your chance Rollie.

Here are the some real world things to consider...

First and foremost is a relocation package. Look in the job listing for any kind of "relocation assistance". If there is none listed, you can be fairly sure there is none offered. So, if moving yourself is "not okay", then there is likely little point to applying. However, if it is "okay" then you should make that known in your listing response somehow (maybe it is already included in the on-line application). Try to re-enforce your "will relo yourself" as a hiring manager for a Fender Scottsdale position that has "no relo assistance" may look past an application from, say, Atlanta.

The other thing to consider is that there is a lot of mention of the Scottsdale facility. I used to live in Scottsdale (near Pinnacle Peak in the north). When the company I worked for in Scottsdale went under due to problems in the nuclear power industry (read: Japan's Fukushima tsunami in 2011), I was MORE than happy to leave Scottsdale for the beauty, affordability, and great weather of nearby Colorado Springs. The summers in Phoenix/Scottsdale are ridiculously hot. I remember seeing Kid Rock at an outdoor amphitheater there and he said "Don't give me that 'dry heat' b******t, it is f*****g hot here!!!". At the time is was about 10pm and still close to 110. Also, Scottsdale is a bit expensive; Phoenix is right adjacent and a little cheaper (but there is lots of traffic).

Also, there was also some mention on about getting jobs from "cold applications" on company job boards. With IT improvements in how these work (primarily from the HR backside), the use of these by companies has greatly improved over the last 10-15 years. Hence, it is becoming more and more of a trend for people to find a job this way. This is good because it has become much easier to find jobs without having a "friend to bring you in" or working with a "recruiter".

Just some 'keeping it real" input.. Good luck!

I applied for Controller a few years ago (a few = more like 15) not expecting to get an answer. No music industry contacts or experience and my manufacturing environment experience was ancient. To Fender's credit, I did get a reply and not just a form letter either. As suspected, I would not be considered further, but nice touch. As a hiring manager myself, I always contact everyone we bring in for any opening in my dept. It makes a good impression. Did I switch from being a hard core Gibby guy to Fender because I got a response? Honestly, I can't say yes for sure but it certainly didn't hurt.
