Just scored some. I'm pretty happy about it. That'll be one off the bucket list.

In my opinion, seeing Mayer is about as close as one could get--today--to seeing Hendrix skill. Say what you want about him--the dude can flat play.

I actually think he challenges the alltime greatness of Hendrix's 13-minute version of "Red House" here (before you slam me, at least watch all 10 minutes of this and try to use headphones or a good sound system):

By the way, this entire concert film is worth watching, in my opinion. Some incredible tone and playing here (see, e.g., 1:30:39 (through the end of that song...Slow Dancing...duet with Robbie McIntosh so great IMO)):

Congrats on the tix...I know you like his music greatly.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing him, but it kinda depends on which version of himself he's being that night...if its the blues/r&b/rock and roll John Mayer, I'm there...if its the pop-oriented "Your Body Is A Wonderland" version, meh...not so much.

Thanks! If you get a minute, check out Steve and Pino's appreciation of what he's doing at 7:00 of the first vid I posted above. I mean he shows all kinds of range in that song, including playing behind the nut, one handed, all sorts of Hendrixish stuff IMO.

Steve Jordan is digging it at about 7:00 to 7:20 !! LOL

I was listening to the John Mayer Trio live album and had a Stevie Ray Vaughan album in the player. The first track on the SRV album was a live track. The two albums flowed together so easily, it took me a minute to realize the album had changed.

You shouldn't use John Mayer is the same sentence as Hendrix. I wouldn't mind seeing him if it was his trio thing

Not really my thing...

Saw him at JazzFest this year (he cancelled last year), and he put on a good show... not a great show.

Best number was a Blind Faith cover (Can't find my way home) and he had alot of help from 2 additional guitars.

I think he's a competent player, but he lacks the kind of charisma that a Clapton, Townshend, Hendrix etc. possess.

We didn't even stay for the whole set.

But, there's a reason Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavors and it sounds like you're more of a fan than I so I know you'll have a good time !

cheers!

Hope you enjoy the show. Awaiting your review!
John Mayer really has it all, being that he is an
accomplished guitar player, has a good voice
and writes good compositions.
My nephew told me: "Yeah he is a deusch-bag but I´m still a fan."
I guess there is something about his public personna that just
turns people off.
I have the dvd, In the light.
I enjoy playing that when I want to see a bunch of Strats on stage.
There´s no denying, he knows his stuff.

My desire to see him is outweighed by the prospect of being surrounded by 10,000 college sorority girls screaming for songs from his first record. Now, if Dave Matthews was playing the same night to attract that crowd elsewhere, I'd be into it.

+1,000 Mayer's talented for sure but he's not an innovator. Nothing original about his style, but like I said he's talented. Most of his riffs I've heard before many times. Hendrix was from another world. As far as the power trio thing goes, there's too much empty space for me. The old timers did the power trio way better IMO. Rory Gallagher, Cream, Hendrix. Often imitated, never duplicated. Just my opinion.

+1, my thoughts exactly.

I actually enjoy best his shows with Keith Urban (who imo is actually a pretty underrated guitarist).

Happened to catch a satellite radio broadcast of Mayer's tour a couple of weeks ago. Sound quality didn't seem great and that may not be Mayer's fault. However, what we really noticed was what seemed to be a real drop off in his voice. It sounded like all his songs have been tuned to a lower key so he can reach the highs. Whether this is the result of his recent throat problems or not I don't know. The effect was rather jarring though and we didn't enjoy it at all.

Hope your experience is better!

A better guitarist than songwriter in my opinion. He has nice touch when he plays, songs worth noting are; "Shadow Days", "Waiting On The World To Change", "Heartbreak Warfare" and "Say". The rest won't be mentioned for obvious reasons.
