I need like some alternate way to execute pinch harmonics...I've tried just lightly touching the pick to the string and I guess I'm doing somethin' wrong 'cause the harmonic is barely registering. Any suggestions for an idiot guitarist?

I've found that using the bridge pickup with plenty of distortion helps. It takes a bit of practice to feel the note as you pick and touch your thumb to get the harmonic. Here is a pretty good lesson on how to do it:

a A.H. is not like a regular harmonic. you press on the fret lik a regular note, but when you strike it, you have to hit iyt with your pick, then thumb. it takes some practice to do it right. watch the youtube video posted above.

You can try it with a coin. Billy Gibbons uses a Mexican Peso, and listen to "La Grange".

NO!!! ANYTHING BUT LA GRANGE.
I've heard that riff from every other person who plays at my school and its driving me half mad.

But...I start my sophomore year after the summer, then I take guitar 1. I've already had 5 months of lessons so this stirred in with it will be like an instant A? (I'm gonna take guitar lessons till I'm good as Kirk Hammett...which'll never happen lol. Oh well, MORE FUN FOR ME!)

The May 2008 issue of Guitar Player magazine has an article about harmonics, pretty informative stuff, too.

use a very light guage pick and really pop the string. once you get the hang of it. start working with your regular picks.

Use a pickup setting and amp setting with a lot of gain and treble. That's what works best for me. I couldn't get it when I first started trying to learn it, but keep doing it and you'll find a spot that seems somewhat natural.

I too had a very difficult time with this for a long time.
Just recently I have finally got them down somewhat and what I had to start doing is being more forceful with my picking because that helps me hit my thumb on the string. All I can suggest is practice practice practice. It has taken me far longer than it should have to get these down but now I use them alot. :D
