Music became lablled by record labels for marketing purposes. Sabbath, Deep Purple, Priest, and Maiden are all rock bands, but since they were heavier than other rock bands at the time, somebody thought to call it hard rock or heavy metal so people wouldn't think that they were the same kind of rock music as Kansas or Steely Dan. Then Fans started to associate with the labels, cause in the late 80s, you could say you liked metal, but then if you wanted to make sure people understood which metal bands, you would say thrash metal, so people didn't think you liked the Bon Jovi or Stryper metal...

Only the stuck up ones do that.

And those people only generally like one sub genre of metal, and bash you if you don't conform to there tastes.

I myself first and foremost love pretty much every genre of metal. After that I like punk/hardcore, and then classic, alt, hard, and indie rock

Of course we do, it's the only way we can describe things we like and don't like. We do it to everything in our lives, not just music. Could you imagine if we liked everything the same amount? There would be zero excitement in our lives. Talk about boring....

we need generes and catagories for disscussion and shopping and what not. But what doesn't make sence is judging a Band by it's Genre.

BTW, can someone give me 5 example of Emo? I've been having a hard time telling it from Goth, or Death Rock.

There's a difference? I must be getting old.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I thought Emo was a Gothic Muppet, so I drew one....

"Why do people label music?"

I guess it's so they can tell their friends what they don't like !
