I personally think its stupid.

I mean where I'm from, anything that isn't metal is bad music. But I love punk rock. So tell me, why would metal fans, who have been labeled as evil and satanic, label other musicians, don't you think that metal fans, if ANYONE, should know how much of a hypocrit that makes you seem?

Dude, who cares. I like NYHC, and the metal heads make fun on Hardcore and the hardcore kids make fun of metal :) . I like metal too btw. I don't like emo, punk, top40, but really, if you like it, why should it matters what other people label it. Just enjoy what you like, glad it's there for you man.

Yeah but i guess what i really was getting at is wondering why metal heads of all people would attack other types of music when they are looked down upon by society as scum by the upperclass. any opinion on that?

I guess it would be why not, everyone picks on each other, so why not do the same?

Only the stuck up ones do that.

And those people only generally like one sub genre of metal, and bash you if you don't conform to there tastes.

I myself first and foremost love pretty much every genre of metal. After that I like punk/hardcore, and then classic, alt, hard, and indie rock

Personally I think a particular music-group is just a music group. I'm a metalhead/punk myself really and I know down to earth that only a few types of metal is satanic. My youth pastor even looks down on me somewhat for liking METALLICA which we all know is pretty far from satanic. He never listens to metal, just sits back and discriminates it with no intent of ever going back on his word. To be quite honest, I enjoy Christian music just as much as he does, but the same repetitive thing does get old.

To the extent, music shouldn't necessarily influence someone except becoming part of a group that shares a common interest in a particular genre, like metal or punk. Some people just think a vice-versa will occur and think something like "Black metal will make you satanic".

And I really don't discriminate other genre-lovers besides callin' em fartknockers just for fun with absolutely no intent of discrimination. Its just music, why make a big stink about it?

People have a need to identify and subcatagorize everything.

Dude you just have to chill and be yourself. I am not into much
metal stuff but there is some I like. To label someone because
of the music style they like is a joke and the people that do so thats
there problem. I go to Church every Sunday and board meetings
every month. Listen to classic rock, pop, celtic, and country I have
a couple thousand dollars worth of ink on me and 6'4" 215 I get
stereotyped all the time and I just don't care because I no who
I am. Just be true and do on to others as you wish to have
done to you.

'Am personally in favour of much 'labeling' in music.

Cause otherwise it would be too tedious, finding surf music in the mega-rack among the randomly-filed thousands of Sinatra and Zeppelin and Lawrence Welk and Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton and Kingston Trio and Whitesnake and Carly Simon and Megadeth and How To Speak Lebanese and John Grisham The Verdict book on disk CDs.

Labels don't bother me too much - I listen to reggae, and if you found my iPod, you'd think I'm a total pot-head.
Go ahead, test my hair, I've never smoked anything in my life.

- Labeling (the 'genres') of music make it easier to discuss/find music

- Labeling music does not necessarily mean closemindedness, which seems to be what you're talking about.

I used to be guilty of if. I think all kids are at some point. They think they're so openminded to like such and such music, then they act all closeminded defending it as the only decent music there is. Like anyone has the right to define good or bad. The good part is we all grow out of it.
