Yes, Big Brother is indeed watching. You don't see him often. That's because there are no longer any phone booths in which he can run to in order to change into his superhero duds.

With respect to decent luthiers, a Fender Showcase dealer might be a starting point, although the NYC location is a GC on 14th Street and I'd be wary on that one. Guitarist grapevines might be another source. Rob's suggestion of sourcing out a tech at a specific level of skill is interesting. I have a suggestion. Suppose the company puts together a listing of their authorized service centers naming who, at each location holds the desired certificates.

We're going on six years in these Forums and this is the first I've heard that the techs at the Authorized Service Centers are rated Gold, Silver and Bronze. Curiouser and curiouser. It makes perfect sense, under those circumstances, for the company to make it possible for the consumer to know who to ask for. In my racket, it's the difference between a first year resident and a board certified surgeon. Who do you want doing YOUR knee replacement, or operating on YOUR Masterbuilt one-off guitar :?:

Well, with healthcare costs being what they are these days....

Just a question. Why isn't every tech a gold tech? Why have different levels at all? I wouldn't want a third rate tech practicing on my gear.

Because you don't need a craftsman to change strings for you. And yes some people still return their guitar for string changes, as silly as that sounds. Or pickups, pots, basic set up even.

I don't think Fender widely advertise the fact that there are differing levels of competence at repair centres. Everyone would be at the Gold and no one at the Bronze. Leaving needless gaps in the Silver and Bronze. When it's simply not needed. I think the better policy would be to have in company decision as to who does what.
Return your guitar to any shop for repair. Gets judged by a couple of folk on how difficult the repair is. Then is sent for repair to the correct level of repair centre.

One thing I am interested in, very interested in though, if Rob has time to reply. The local shop that I do the odd repair for. The stuff their setup fella doesn't feel happy doing, is a Fender dealer.
I'd like if possible, Fender training or accreditation if at all possible. I'm sure that Fender Authorized Repair is not common in my area and having that available would be a great asset to a medium to large size privately owned independent shop. In a small town that could only benefit from the award.
They already have a in house luthier repairing the woodwind stuff. The only person in the country capable of conducting such repairs. And even a decent recording studio and music school upstairs too.

The only thing i would backtrack a little on, is that the levels are as clear cut as they seem. They're not. There is plenty of grey area between levels. Using myself as an example, I would consider myself somewhere between Bronze and Silver. I have some Silver skills, but really don't have the facility (my office!!) to do the work.
Regardless of level, as often as possible, there is consultation with us here at Fender, and ALL levels should be treating the instruments they get in for repair or evaluation with loving care. When folks call or write, we try to get them to the right place for what their needs are. Also remember that we aren't talking about just guitars when we're talking about Authorized Service Centers.

All the best,
rob

A listing of approved/certified service centers and their respective rating is a great idea.

My Local GC just lost their guitar tech, not sure why. They had to call someone in to finish the work I was having done on my Strat.

I went to GC for this since I have no access to a listing of approved Fender service centers. From a consumer perspetive this is a frustrating process to deal with.

Ibanez has a listing available to the GP and that is handy info to have access to.

Hi j.4knee, actually the IS an Authorized Service Center listing (which, ironically seems to be down for maintenence right now  )
http://www.fender.com/dealers/service-centers/

They are ALL Authorized. To the best of my knowledge GC's are now part of our Service Center program, so that should be fine. As stated above, there are approvals and discussions throughout the repair processes.
Check back soon on the link. If you have something you need done soon, feel free to get a hold of our Consumer Relations Dept.
All the best,
rob

I have an update for all you boys and girls of our Fender forum. Rob Shwarz intervened on my behalf and after a couple of emails and phone calls has put me in touch with a gentleman at Fender who has placed an order for a brand new replacement stratocaster body for my guitar, happily allowed me to make a color change after the order was placed and set me up with CB Perkins in San Jose who I understand are some of the finest guitar techs in California. Rob I can't even come close to thanking you, your coworker and FMIC enough for what has been done for me. I came to this forum not with the intentions of getting help, stirring up problems or getting back at anyone. I came to this forum just to vent as they say. I have been through almost 9 months of lies, deception and hidden damage while working with a guitar store and their hobby skilled repair tech in Sacramento, Ca. I just needed to let it out so I could forget about it and enjoy my new Fender American standard in Sienna burst with maple fingerboard that my mother purchased for me because my beloved strat was destroyed. We dealt with Matt Eckhardt at Guitar Center in Chico, Ca. the finest salesman I have ever dealt with. Thank you Mom and Matt! Rob I never dreamed a person of your caliber would give a second thought to my problem and fix it. Again Thank you! If there is anything at all I can do for you and FMIC please do not hesitate to ask! :D :) :o 8) :P
