Looking at the pics I notice the second tier is 6". I don't think that's enough. I suggest 7".

I built this board from scrap wood laying around the house and it is very heavy.

My last board was quite heavy, too. I built it using some scrap ply I had in the basement. It was ⅝" thick. My current board is made from ⅜" ply and it makes a pretty big difference.

well due to my wife's tire blowing out i didn't have time to get one completely welded up, but i've got one halfway put together, sloppily... lol. just wanted to play with it tonight. i'm cooking dinner now... i'm going to put my pedals on it and mess with it for a bit, then i'll post a few pics and....probably confirm most of the things you guys have suggested are the way to go. i do love the look of it though! stay tuned. :)

right, so like i said this one's just barely welded and not cleaned up, and no holes drilled yet. just test pictures, really.

view like the one on the print

I've gotta say, it felt pretty nice hitting the pedals on the top , didn't seem too high to me. but I've got nothing to compare to... never had a second level on my board before. there is , as you can see, plenty of room between my foot and the big muff... but I don't have a wah to sit on here to get a nice shot of why it's as tall as it is...
Image
my few pedals look really lonely.... expansion on the mind, for sure. looks like there's room for around 10 boss pedals on each row, or 4-5 EHX big boxes. again, keep in mind there will be holes drilled for all the wires to come through, this is just me getting a feel for how the pedals sit in.
Image
took this shot to show how much room you're left with between the top of the big muff and the top of the side. roomy!
Image
the rear storage compartment... there will be a door of some sort on this, and holes through the front so all your power supplies can reach the pedals. this is just to show you how much space there is in there. 20' extension, onespot in a surge protector.if you're like me, you like having a small tool kit with you at all times. i have mine in an old DOD pedal box, it fits perfectly in this space also. I'll get a pic of that when I've got one finished and I get some nice pictures.
strings, i like the idea of making things adjustable... but that would make things sooo much more complicated, and in turn, expensive. I have 3 sets of parts like this , so I'll go ahead and make these up and see what happens, but will be revisiting my CAD program to make some tweaks for a second design... I'm thinking it'd be great if the second level sat at a slight incline, just so it feels more natural when you kick those pedals.. and I want to shorten the second tier slightly, and add a space on the right side for the wah pedal to fit in. it would really make things a lot more compact and efficient. like BMW's board, you know? I've seen that a lot, not sure why I didn't think of that while putting this all together....i guess because I'm not a wah guy at all... having the 11 inches on the first tier gives you plenty of room, but it'll be mostly wasted space behind your front line of pedals. i hate wasting space.
BMW, 6 seems like plenty for boss stuff and all the power supplies i've looked up dimensions for. why 7? I (could be wrong) figure most things that will be up top are things that will be on or off, not things you'd need to mess with during a song.... but that's just my thinking. in the next version, I'll be taking some depth from the first tier, guess it couldn't hurt to add an inch or two up top :)
DSHALFSTACK- the plan is to drill holes in the side so your jacks / plugs/ whatever you need can come right through with no problem. see my personal board I made last year -
Image I like the idea of things being closed in on the sides so it's less likely your pedals will be damaged if something terrible happens....like the board gets somehow kicked off stage. or dropped without the cover on...there's so much room INSIDE this thing, I don't think it's an issue... this weekend I'm taking a finished one to the free concert in Sparta, TN i've been organizing with some friends... I'm going to let any and all guitar players there have some demo time with it to see what they think. with any luck, i'll be taking orders. :)

I used 6" one time and later wished it was 7" because of the plugs for the adapters pointing straight out the end.

So I've decided this one will be my test/demo board that i'll try different ideas on to see what works with this design. drilled one input/output hole and painted the interior bright firetruck red. really makes it pop, yeah? Image

Thanks! Haven't weighed it yet... It's not as heavy as I thought it would be so far, but I still have holes to drill and a top / back door to add. I'll hopefully be getting the top/lid/whatever figured out and fabbed up in the next week or so. I'll post more pics when more gets done. :)
