okay.... so you've probably all seen my pedalboard by now... I've taken some notes from you guys , friends of mine here in Nashville, and i've done a ton of online research on what people seem to want in "the perfect pedalboard" I've been working on my new design for almost 2 years now. I have made some connections at local guitar shops, and HOPE to sell them by the truckload someday soon. (hey, I can dream, right?)
I'm not saying mine will be perfect, but it's getting closer all the time. I've also downloaded a free CAD program and have almost completed the entire thing in a nice blueprint form.
I've got a buddy shearing and forming the trial run pieces in the next few days, and I'll weld it all up and put pics up HERE. but what I want to know is
1: what's the biggest pedal you use?
2: how many pedals do you have?
3: if you know, how much does your current board weigh by itself?
4: do you want your power supply hidden ? or right there on top?
5: and the age old debate... velcro? or not to velcro?
thanks for any and all feedback you give me :)
cheers --Dan

The biggest pedal I have is my Tama Iron Cobra.

Don't hide behind pedals, thats my motto. One pedal, a footswitch that only does one thing. Brings in the 2nd volume control.

Image

Tell ya mate, I've a fortune in pedals sat around doing nothing.
Plexitone £190
Wilkinson Chorus, a prototype, never given a price, never been released for sale.
Reel Echo £100 odd
AquaPuss £100 odd
Boss Harmonist £80 odd
Watkins Copycat £215
Various fuzz's and Octave fuzz's (8 at last count, could be more)
1971 Jen Wah
1967 Jen Fuzz Wah
Boss GE10 £180

And probably some more stuff that I've forgot about. Because with a busy regular gigging schedule. If I can't do it with amp distortion and a switchable volume, I don't do it. I'd happily eat those pedals before I lug a pedal board around the country again.

When I did use a board (2010)

Image

With wireless receiver on the board too, wah is off board.
Made that myself. The pedals were velcro'd to the top. The wiring all sat in the compartment underneath, as did the power supply.

Then 2011 this was on a store bought board.

Image

Better off without em. Tuner on top of the amp and a footswitch under the mic' stand.

And god yeah, a load of stuff in those pictures I've forgotten about that I need to sell off

BOSS BCB-30 Pedal Board

The pedal board takes 3 pedals, I use any 3 of these at a time:

BOSS TR-2
15 oz

BOSS CE-5
15 oz

BOSS GE-7
1lb

BOSS TU-3
14 oz

BOSS FDR-1
1lb

Ibanez TS9
1.3lbs

1: what's the biggest pedal you use?
They're all about the same, Boss single-sized stomps

2: how many pedals do you have?
I use 3 at a time, 6 that I use regularly, 10+ in total

3: if you know, how much does your current board weigh by itself?
2lbs 11oz

4: do you want your power supply hidden ? or right there on top?
I don't care if it's visible or not, as long as it's secured so the power won't pull out by accident

5: and the age old debate... velcro? or not to velcro?
I'm fine either way. The Boss Pedal Board is designed so my Boss pedals snap in and stay. The TS9 was slightly wider than the Boss pedals, so I filed down the plastic tabs inside the pedal board to make it fit.

I've lived through plenty of on-stage frustrations derived soley from lousy pedal boards. Particularly the store-bought kind that look like they were designed by a guy who makes fences for a living or else commit you to a certain brand or size of pedal. I built mine with a couple of specific things in mind as my objectives.

1) I hate having all the pedals at the same level. I don't like having to carefully point my toe in an exact spot in the back row to avoid stepping on other pedals in the front row and accidentally switching them on or off; or even worse, rolling the control dials and not knowing about it until the next time I use it and then everything sounds stupid so I have to stop playing and scramble to re-adjust. I like to be able to just reach for the button, slam it and play without worrying about other stuff going askew. That said I prolly went a little too high on my second row. I went inch and a half. Prolly coulda made do with an inch.

2) I hate messy boards so I made sure I could hide all my cabling and the power supply. All those wires going all willy nilly is just trouble looking for a place to happen. Bin there, done that, not doing it again. All the cables on my board are all secured from moving with zip-ties. My connections don't fail me mid-set.

3) I bolt down any pedal that can be bolted. Just makes it more secure and solid feeling. I don't really worry about velcro letting loose and a pedal moving around but it doesn't feel as solid as a bolted down pedal. In my case the only two I could bolt down were the Clyde Wah and The Supa-Trem. The others are all Velcro.

In hindsight, I think I would have liked to make the board about 5 inches wider over on the right and install my Deja-MiniVibe. This pic is a little old. I sometimes swap out the HotBox and swap in a Fuzz. It currently holds a Fuzz in that location. As it sits right now the entire assembly tips the scales at 18 lbs. That includes a 15 foot extension cord permanently mounted underneath that guarantees I never forget to bring a cord to power it. It coils up nicely underneath for transport.

I'm with BMW on the 2 level thing, I prefer my top level to be angled. There is room under the angled portion for power, and I lined my whole board with indoor/outdoor carpet, this way velcro will stick. I change things up from time to time, so the carpeting allows me to change up without worrying about footprint of pedals.
Image

Pedals not hooked together in this pic, but you can see how easy it is to change things up.

ANd all closed up, a bit heavy, but it works well for me.

I pretty much like to keep my boards wiring uncluttered. I hide my power supply, I use Velcro, the actual board without pedals is very light, and you can see my biggest pedal as well as how many.

Built from a deconstructed pellet.

awesome feedback, guys! I really appreciate it!
my board will be 2-tiered, with the back row up slightly higher than BMW's ... this is one area for concern MAYBE, but I made it that way so a WAH could fit on the first level with no problems. of course this is all theoretical until tomorrow when I piece together the first prototype....
as for overall width, or length, whichever way you're looking at it- mine will be 30" long , the first row about 11" deep (again, with big pedals and wahs in mind) and the top row 6" deep for smaller , BOSS sized pedals. Arnold, with the angled top row in mind, I've thought of this myself, and it would be super easy to lay another piece of aluminum in there at whatever angle, weld it in, and you've got the same effect. or, if someone wanted i could have the center piece formed up a little differently.
with cleanliness and organization in mind, there's a cavity underneath the second level that will be perfect for power supplies, cables weaving in and out, and even room for extension cords.... my current board(the avatar pic to the left) has an earlier version of this, and I have a 20 footer rolled up in there.
The whole thing is aluminum, so it will be easy to put holes wherever you need them, and I intend on making standard holes optional, IE the ones on my current board on either side so your extension cord can go either way, and smaller holes on the back of the first level for power supply cables to come through.
as far as mounting goes, the inside is mill finished aluminum so velcro can be easily stuck down wherever, holes for bolts or zip ties can be easily drilled, or carpeting could be attached with a little work. I've tried to address the first thing BMW said, I want my board to be open to translation, not pigeonholing anyone into doing a certain thing. I'll have my parts tomorrow, and if I can I'll get at least one of them welded and post pictures here for you all to pick apart and give me your thoughts. thanks, guys.
oh, and niki - I love the punk rock simplicity to having one pedal that says "LOUD". that is awesome. :) I grew up a pedal geek, I can't imagine not having at least a big muff with me at all times. pictures ASAP~!
in the meantime, here's the CAD pics I've drawn up in the last few days. shows the cover which won't be made until the board itself is perfected. let me know what you think. thanks!Image

I like the look of that a lot. The metal bumper looking stuff is perfect. Only 2 things I would note at this time:

1. Your 2nd tier is going to be 3.5" from the floor. I've never had the 2nd tier so I don't know what that would be like, but ....

2. I really liked Arnold Layne's sloped 2nd tier. I would be really cool if it could be adjusted to the angle the player likes. Maybe 3 or 4 inclines you can choose from.

Really looking forward to seeing the prototype! :D

Actually, both my tiers are sloped. It's difficult to see from the pic but the lower tier is about an inch and a half higher along the rear edge; under the wah. The only reason to $@!&# the board that I can figure is for ease of viewing the controls. It's not for ease of toe access because it actually hinders toe access IMO by making the switch part of the pedal (the part you need to reach) lower down than the rest of it, thereby making the switch harder to hit and the control knobs easier to hit and accidentally knock out of whack.

That word really has to be removed from the language filter. I mean c'mon. Really? Do people still use that word in a derogatory way anymore? I think the last time I heard it was by Christopher Walken in Pulp Fiction and that had been the first time I'd heard it in well over two decades. The insistence on that word being included takes a valuable word out of our vocabulary.

Would it be possible to incorporate the vertical sides of the board so that they don't go higher than the tiers? Perhaps include the sides on the cover instead of the board. Based on your current design, it seems the vertical walls would get in the way of cables, jacks, etc.

FWIW - I like the two level tiered design. I built this board from scrap wood laying around the house and it is very heavy. Neatness on a pedalboard doesn't concern me as much but it does have enough room underneath for power and cables if I ever choose to. I've actually jammed 2 more pedals on this board since the photo was taken and it is quite crowded now. My goal for the next board will be a lighter, slightly wider, and slightly less deep board.
