What movie star are your favorite musicians?

For me it was Jeff Bridges in "Crazy Heart" . . . . He actually played guitar for the role.

How about you?

The Ramones in "Rock N Roll Highschool"

It seems to me that they actually did a live set for the movie, even though there were poorly done studio music videos within it.

And I'm not sure about it, and I didn't catch any actors' names, but the whole band in the 1958 classic "Hot Rod Gang"

The first song here, starts a couple seconds in. Not sure if they actually did it, but it's a good song.

Kevin Bacon could qualify as one, for starters.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I thought Gary Busey portrayed Buddy Holly quite convincingly. And he did his own guitar work and vocals onscreen.

Steven Segal . Don't laugh now, this guy has a deep appreciation for the blues and is the owner of the late Albert King's Flying V's . There was a article in Vintage Guitar magazine with him a few years ago about him. He actually has his own band and he can tear it up.
There's also Gary Sinese who does a lot of shows for the troops with his group the Lt. Dan Band. He has my respect tenfold, for taking the time out of his busy schedule for doing that.

This also came to me first after reading thread title. Loved that flick and those Gretsch guitars.

How about Michael J. Fox in the movie "Back To The Future"? From what I understand, that was really HIM with that Gibson ES-335 on stage, rocking out to Chuck Berry. Michael J. Fox did his own guitar part for the movie. He could really rock too! But today, it's really sad about his Parkinson's Disease and most likely can't play guitar like he did back then.

I'd have to say Johnny Depp.

+1

I have always liked to hear Robert Downey Jr. play piano, too.

Will Smith. Probably for his role in Independence Day.

Kidding!

Easily the Blues Brothers. "Everybody Needs Somebody" is genius every time.

Many have been named that I wound name. Such as Jake & Elwood, Johnny Depp, Gary Sinise, Steven Seagal, Steve Martin. Add to that Ray Charles who has appeared in several films as a musician as his enormous talent and notoriety enabled him to cross over and get some film work. Johnny Depp may eventually wind up doing music exclusively if his vision keeps deteriorating.

Others I'd name:

Ronny Cox's guitar skills got him his first major film role in "Deliverance."

Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson were each a very successful singer/songwriter who later had film careers. Nobody ever accused Kristofferson of overacting and Willie was believable.

Justin Timberlake can do about anything I think and was really good in "Trouble With The Curve."

Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Costner and Hugh Laurie became famous primarily as actors but actually are good players. Hugh Laurie could do 3 full sets solo with either a guitar or piano. He is a very adept player and can also sing.

Rick Springfield went the other way as a musician that got into acting and it turns out was decent at both.

Jared Leto can do both also.

As far as amazing guitarists who did some acting something must be said about Jerry Reed because he could play exceptionally well, wrote some big records and his acting in those Burt Reynolds films was entertaining too.

Beyoncé Knowles and Queen Latifah belong on my list also. Queen Latifah actually got nominated for an Academy Award, so she has some for real acting chops and not many musicians turned actor have ever gotten an Oscar nomination.
