Wait, you mean ... there are other brands?

  Yep, there sure are. I have a lot of different flavors but usually only one of each. Fender, Gibson, Martin, Ibanez, Danelectro, Supro, Yamaha and then the real beaters like my Stinger that doubles as a slide guitar and boat anchor and Morell and Rogue resonators.I did install a Beard Resonator Cone in the Rogue for fun. Ibanez and Martin are the only brands I have two of.

I wouldn't mind a nice Tele and maybe a Melody Maker just to round things out.

Yeah but what kind of Epiphone's are these guitslinger? The cheap as chips Epi's that sell for about £250 here are pieces of crap i hear. They have a dreadful reputation. Where are these Epi's made nowadays?

I like the look of the Epi LP Customs but only if there's a better standard of workmanship.

Most Epi's are made in China now. They are not crap (not even the $250 jobbies, they just require a little work to make them shine.

If you want a fast car, you can buy a Ford Mustang for $x and go about replacing all the components with high performance parts .... or you could just save yourself the trouble and buy a Ferrari. Nothing to replace on those, but expect to pay more.

I see Epiphones the same way. There are certain advantages to buying a Gibson ... they have premium wood and fret wire for example, where the Epi's use cheaper wood (sometimes literally plywood) and wire. It does make a difference in the final product, but you have to ask yourself, is it worth an extra $1000-$2000 for that wood? Does the audience notice the difference?

My Epiphone Lucille was $800 new.
Swap out the pickups for real Gibson pickups, $200
Tusq Nut and Saddles $100
All electronics swapped out with better quality wire, pots, jacks $100-150ish?

So figure around $1250 tops?

Gibson Custom B.B. King Lucille Hollow Body Electric Guitar (Assorted Colors)
$3,799.00 (Sam Ash)

See why I like Epiphones?

Hi Gorgon both my Epi Les Pauls cost over $500 and that was at a considerable discount that my usual dealer gives me.They are both exemplary guitars and both sound and play every bit as good as their American made counterparts and even better than a lot of the new models. An ex boyfriend of my youngest daughter tried my G-400 Custom and he preferred it to his Gibson SG and now his SG is in the closet and a G-400 Custom is his main guitar. The best Les Paul I ever played was a 1960 Tribute Epi,it cost over $1,100 and the fit and finish were not only flawless but incredibly executed-much better than I have seen on any Gibsons lately.

A guy who I have jammed with and who Blinkers jams with regularly, paid over $3,000 for a Les Paul in 2009 and has had nothing but trouble with it since day one.He is continually bringing the guitar to the dealer for warranty work for the tuning yet it continues to go out of tune before a song is over.Where it's his first Les Paul he refuses to demand an exchange and he won't listen to reason-that's his loss-but a guitar that costs over $3,000 shouldn't have enormous problems like this one has.A vast majority of the Problems with current Les Pauls are related to tuning and a lot of people attrite this to the way the nut is cut and its placement. If I were offered a choice of either a new Gibson or the corresponding Epi model,I'd pick the Epi.I own 6 Epis from China,Indonesia and Japan/U.S in the case of my 1965 John Lennon Casino, which sounds identical to the original and is tied with my '65 Strat as being my favourite guitar, plus out of the hundreds of guitars I've played over the past decades the '65 Casino is the most comfortable and easiest on the hands to play.

Back in the 90s the QA of Epiphone was somewhat inconsistent but that isn't the case these days. The Epiphones that are coming to market these days are extremely well made and are great guitars in every way.Even the $150 Epiphone acoustics and $200 electrics are well above other guitars in their price range in every way and in quite a few cases are better than guitars costing much more This is all due to their almost fanatical commitment to building high quality guitars at relatively low prices. .Cheers.

If you want to pay a few extra $$'s and get the best Epiphone you've ever played, check out the Elitist line. They are priced higher, but with good reason. They are (IMO) head and shoulders above Gibson, and that's why Epiphone (who is now owned by Gibson) discontinued all Elitist models except for this model I think:

Epiphone Elitist 1965 Casino
Image
$1,799.00 (Guitar Center)

Epiphone Elitist 1965 Casino Features:
5-ply maple back, sides, and top
One-piece mahogany neck
24-3/4" scale
Neck set at the 16th fret
Rosewood fretboard
Bone nut, 1-5/8"
22 frets
P90 USA single coil rhythm pickup
P90 USA single coil reverse treble pickup
Nickel hardware
2 volume, 2 tone, 3-way toggle
Grover tuners

Notice it's a Casino. Gibson doesn't make a Casino. Greedy bastids.

Thank you Fender btw for letting us talk about the competition here. One of the many reasons my next guitar will be a Fender.

No "Intruders" here, but then again, none of my Gibson's are of the flashy sort. Just the basic tools they were meant to be!

They all play easier and I can bend much further due to the shorter scale Gibson uses, and don't remember who said it, but a Gibson thru a BF amp does sound great.

Yeah I see no way around it.
We need the discipline and patience
to save enough money for a guitar
that will not dissapoint.
$800 to $1200 dollars gets us in the game,
and $1700 will go a long way.

The real scary figures are when we sit down
to actually see how much we spend on absurdities.
I spend $700 dollars a year in cigarrettes.
Currently, I have succesfully cut out softdrinks and chips.

...Must now work out a plan to treat my Strat to a tube amp.

The only point I see in purchasing an inexpensive guitar is
if you enjoy the journey of modifications, but even then
I wouldn´t want to saddle myself to an unfortunate neck or body.

To me it´s save enough, or remain wondering.

I'll let you have it when I am ready to pass it on...I was actually thinking of putting some humbucker sized P90s in it as I am missing my old LP Special and I don't have anything with P90s anymore!

I had an Epiphone Sheraton a while back and it was good. I traded it for somethin' else, i can't remember what! wish i hadn't let that one go either

Back in the day i bought a Gibson LP Custom and straight away i had to get the pickups wax soaked to get rid of the squealing microphonics. Think it was a regular thing back then for folks to have to do that.

At the time i was pretty miffed at having to do that with a guitar that price!

Sweet pictures to be sure!
If I bought a Gibson or Epi, it would be a hollow body no doubt,
and definitely nothing below $1500 dollars.

We had a photographer come in and I guess this picture belongs
in the "intonation" thread, but maybe also here. It´s the only
picture I have where my precious steel-string is in proper focus.
It was a custom expensive build to my exact specs and the
instrument fits my hands and body like a glove. Proof that spending
the cash is well worth it once you know what you want. Notice the "high rails",
equivalent to the 6105 Fender frets. Every note I press brings me happiness! :D
Totally love the sound and feel. Trying to arrange for a decent
means to get videos with good audio.

I have a cheap Epiphone Special P-90 vaguely based on an old Les Paul Special with two P-90's...I paid $99 for it.

It was made in Indonesia, it has a bolt-on neck, I'm not sure what the wood is (it weighs about 4 pounds, and its supposed to be a solidbody) and the stock tuners suck.

But the thing sounds great, plays beautifully (the neck is a bit too small for my liking, but I can make due) and looks pretty cool...Eventually (when i have the cash) I will replace the stock suckers...erm, tuners with some decent 3x3 Grovers, and I have a nice little sonic diversion from my usual axes.

I have 2 Les Paul Stadands, 2 SGs, and an ES135 all of these are USA Gibsons.

They're fantastic.

I also have some Epi's, an Elitist Country Gent, (excellent) a Broadway, Emperor Regent, and a Swingster Royale White. I've got nothing but good experiences with these.

I think Gibson's, these days, is doing as good a job as they've ever done.

I do realize you can get a dog now and then.

Most of the problems I read in these various forums are usually (not always but usually) nothing a good setup wont fix. One would question why Gibson doesn't do a better final setup, but I guess they're leaving that up to the end customer as everyone has their own touch and the setups need to be tweaked in line with that.

Everyone is looking for something different, I have great strat and a great tele, I don't play them nearly as much as I should, but for me I just am a "gibson" kind of guy I suppose.

it really is horses for courses..
