So I´ve never handled a Les for more than a couple of hours.
My good friend and accountant, he proposed to swap axes for a week.

So it feels small and heavy. Don´t like how that balances out.
This kind of tuning pegs, very comfortable to use no doubt.
The G string keeps playing out. Perhaps the nut needs looking into?
The neck feels comfortable and makes things easy.
I guess my problem with this design is my right hand, everything
seems outlandish, HATE the bridge, that floating pick-guard, I fumble
with the controls- can´t manipulate the pots as I play.
Now, it sounds sweet, truth be told.
Being new to humbuckers, I find the instrument way too sensitive
to attack and dynamics. In my hands, it begs for a compressor.
I sound like crap on it.
Still a few days to go before I recover my Strat.
Will try and discipline myself to play this guitar and learn something
rather that just keep it in the case.
Cheers guys!

Gibson has lost it's appeal for me. Was a time Gibson was head and shoulders above Fender in my mind. Times change, people's tastes mature and before you know it Gibson sucks.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

An intruder? I'm glad you didn't shoot it.

Imagine how heavy they were in the old days before the weight relief.

Still, everyone ought to have one in their collection.

Or if not a Gibson or an Epiphone, at least a Strat with humbuckers...

Or perhaps, better yet... a three-pickup Strat loaded with Split-Rails...

Just a thought. I love both of these guitars.

It's nice of Gibson to put a no frills Les Paul out there for the folks with little $$.

+1
I don't have to imagine( :( ), this beauty has been in my possession since '92. Breaks my back every time I gig with it but I wouldn't sell it for the world. The way I see it, no one does Fender better than Fender, and no one does Gibson better than Gibson. Can't comment on the newer stuff but I sure am happy with this one.... oh and yeah, everyone should have one in their collection.

Looks like East Bay Rays guitar on In God We Trust INC.

Love my Les Paul. Lightest guitar I own. Plays well, sounds good and winds the Gibson fanboys up when I lyingly tell them "I only gig it cos I don't care about it and that my Strat hammers it which is why you'll never see the Strat I record at at gig".

And then as they stare in disbelief, I tell them, "even the engineer says my Strat has a better bass response than mine or his LP".

Here's my 60's Studio Tribute with P-90's and a Honeyburst finish. It's chambered, yeah I know the purists want a boat anchor, but I welcome the weight relief. It plays beautifully and is a serious tone monster. Only cost me $800 and most people who play it love it. I screwed the tailpiece to the body and top wound the strings. Sustains incredibly well and is very lively and resonant. Great bang for the buck and an American made instrument to boot. The LP Studios are fine guitars and as far as a string hanging in the nut, I use Big Bends Nut Sauce on all my guitars. Sometimes gunk gets caught in the nut and causes problems. I welcome all kinds of guitars and the tonal pallet they offer. I'd never call any of them an intruder, they offer a lot of different voices. I almost came home with a Melody Maker the other night. Gibson offers a lot of low cost options that are all made in America. That Melody Maker was a blast to play. It's still calling me and at $299 it still might follow me home.

Since we are all coming out of the closet with our LP's... I'll admit to one too...

Third Gibson LP I've owned and likely my favorite but still ranks below my current Fenders. I'm happy to say...

This thread pretty much sums up my view of Gibsons. The bridge, the weight, the balance, everything feels unfamiliar and wrong to me. Plus I'm allergic to humbuckers, I need a bright clean ringing and percussive rhythm sound and after 30 years of playing Fenders I think my playing style doesn't work on a guitar like a Les Paul.

Different tools for different tasks......

I played a Les Paul exclusively for over thirty years and though I came back to Fender in 2005, I still break out a Gibson whenever the occasion or the mood suits. The old ones were built solid with traditional craftsmanship, contemporary instruments less so (much like everything else made today). There's nothing at all wrong with a good Gibson.

Agreed, horses for courses. They just don't suit my playing style and the kind of music where one would use a "Gibson sound" just isn't the kind of music I want to play.

Gibson has let it's quality slide in the past several years and they're in a slump now that they don't seem to be trying hard to get out of because they keep on turning out new models and changing the tried and true designs and specs of other established models. A guy I have jammed with paid over $3,000 for a new Les Paul in 2009 and he has had nothing but trouble with it since he bought it,yet he won't part with it because it's his first "great" guitar.

I have 2 Epiphone Les Pauls and they are absolutely incredible guitars in every way. The G-400 Custom is almost a spot on copy of the '61 SG bodied 3 pup Les Paul with all the hardware gold-plated.The second is a Traditional Pro with coil tapping and that's just out of this world, the fit and finish are flawless and best of all it sounds just like the PAF Les Paul that Robert Fripp used on the first King Crimson album for songs like " I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph" and "Moonchild".People used to put Gibson on a pedestal and snub their noses at the Epis but that has turned 180 degrees and now Epis are a way better bang for the buck than just about all the Gibsons except for maybe the jazz boxes and acoustics.I now have a grand total of 6 Epis and each one is a very high quality..In my books even if money were no object I'd still prefer Epiphone the best buy in the Gibson family.
