Love the look of these guitars + mini humbuckers, but The price point has me a bit concerned... I'm not usually a pricewhore, but lower price-range Epiphones aren't exactly known as gigging instruments.

Anyone have any experience playing these?

Here's the model I'm looking at, perhaps someone knows a bit more about the quality of the hardware/electronics

I've noodled around on one. Sounded cool. Felt cheap.

I've tried one out in the past at GC and they're not bad guitars at all. Definitely gig worthy instruments.

I bought one of the original re-issues a couple years back, just because they were sort of weird and funky and I thought it would look good on the wall.

Since I bought one of the first models, I didn't get the coil-tap that came out with the second generation, but honestly, I have more than enough single-coil guitars anyway. I like the sound of the bridge pickup, but I think the neck pup is a little puny. It's cute and you get what you pay for.

Image

They are very light weight and I am a sucker for humbuckers and set necks, but gig worthy..? Maybe if you're comparing it to a Squier Affinity, but I'd only take it out as a spare to mess around with. Other than that, just fun for noodling around in the Music Room and letting your friends play.

Now the Epi Nighthawk reissue... you get a lot more tonal possibilities for $100 more and I like the layout better than the Gibson. That's a guitar that I would consider gig worthy. You get a great finish, nice binding and superior appointments, plus a six-saddle string-through bridge instead of the Tune-O-Matic.

And another set neck, too!

my take on it, as a guy who like Epiphones, these are real cool guitars with a cool history. These are real Epiphones, meaning only Epi had this model, it's not a Gibson knockoff or anything. It doesn't happen to be my cup of tea, but with all Epiphones I recommend changing the nut to bone or tusq (graphtech) and the same with the saddles. Start there and see how it feels and sounds. These guitars require a little TLC but they can pretty much all be made into good players.

CRGuitarMan mentioned the Nighthawk - very cool guitars. I also like these quirky offerings:

Alleykat (discontinued?)

Hey Strings!

If you're gonna get a little kinky with the AlleyKat, then I guess I might as well mention my FlameKat, the slightly crazier version of the AlleyKat.

This guitar is funky, with mini-humbuckers and the Epi version of the Bigsby. The guy I bought this guitar from took off the dice knobs, but left them in the compartment in the original case. I think these guitars have been discontinued for a while now.

And like the previously mentioned guitars, this one also has a nice set neck. And yes, it is definitely gig worthy!

String-thru guitars are the bane of my existence. As are most semi-hollows.
