A year ago I bought a Johnson dreadnought. I am still impressed with the sound but the playability is not very good. I never had the guitar set up by a tech and i wondering if this is a better late than never situation. Will this have anything to do with the playability? Or would it just be good to check for flaws, repairs, etc.? Give me your thoughts, thanks.

There are a couple of things that can be done to make it play better. Take it to a tech and him/her check it out.

A decent luthier can reset the neck and bridge, file the saddle and nut. Believe me, I've taken trashed acoustics in and been amazed at the instrument I've gotten back. Your guitar can easily be made to play better as long as the bracing isn't a major problem. Even then it can be fixed but might not be worth the money.

What are you major complaints? Action? Intonation? Warped top? Warped neck? Nasty fretwork?

Fret dressing should run from $25 to $50 depending on where you live and who you use.

If you look at the top from the sides, do you see and rounding of the top? Any slight lifting of the bridge? 12 strings of all makes put tremendous pressure on tops and pretty much all will need some sort of work someday. If it's old and you see any of the problems I listed, you should take it to a luthier.

If none of those problems exsist it could simply be that the top got too dry and the stress on it cracked the top some. If you don't use a humidifier you should.

well my case has a bumper sticker on it from the 1981 Berkshire Mountains Bluegrass Festival...
i did some signs for a local luthier who looked at it while he was here. no arching, but it does need a few adjustments.
thanks
