I just got back from watching the new Superman movie at one of the last remainig drive-in movie theaters in the Chicagoland area, the Cascade Drive-in located in the suburb of West Chicago, Illinois. A very good movie, head and shoulders above all of the other Superman movies made before this one. If you enjoy watching super hero movies you are going to like this. Has anyone had the opportunity to see it yet?

Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie!

Drive-ins are an awesome way to spend a summer evening. We are fortunate enough to have a really nice one not too far from where we live (the 'Transit Drive-In' in Lockport, NY) that my family and I go to a few times a year. Feels kind of like a step backward in time, and it's very affordable, too!

As a Comic Book Fan / Artist , I have no desire to go and waste my money on it. Here's why , Hollywood usually goes and twists comic book properties to their liking with no repsect for the material and from what I've seen , this one is no exception. Christopher Nolan, who did the Dark Knight trilogy, is the producer of this film and he wanted a darker version of Superman. Sorry, but Superman is not a character that is supposed to be " dark ". Plus , what they did to the costume is horrible. Superman's outfit is one of those iconic images that one should not just mess with. It's a part of Americana that we've all grown up with IMO.

I understand that this movie had to be made due to legal contract issues with the franchise. Which opens me to speculate that this maybe the last Superman movie.. Unless we see a Justice League Movie starting soon?to compete with the Avengers, Now that would be dope! :P

I'm looking forward to seeing this and the new Kick $@! movie. If you haven't seen Kick $@!... i highly recommend it. I stumbled upon it on netflix instant and tossed it on because i didn't feel like spending time finding something else to watch. I was very pleasantly surprised. If you love superhero stuff its a great film and comic series.

can't wait to see Supe though. He's my favorite of the Superheroes.

I saw Kickass and loved it, although I never got to read the comic which is a shame. It was written by Mark Millar and drawn by one of my favorites, John Romita Jr. One of these days I'm going to have to go out and buy that mini series. There is a sequal coming out this summer with Jim Carrey in it y'know ! Also, David Goyer who I think wrote the Man Of Steel, has been contracted to do a write up for a JLA film.

I went to see it the at a midnight show the Thursday night before it opened. I saw the ad for it on FB that day and thought, why not. I even paid the $17.25 to see it in IMAX 3D. Have to say I thought the movie was fantastic.
The theater had it on 4 screens and the IMAX one was a little over half full with almost 200 people. I think just about everyone there except myself was wearing some type of Superman swag, t-shirt or hat. Saw one guy with a cape even. Strange geeky, but fun crowd. One guy walked in with a Batman shirt, I thought they'd make him sit next to me.
I went to see it again Sunday night in regular 3D, I think I've been spoiled by IMAX. It was still great however. Initially it bothered me that they changed the costume when it was first revealed over a year ago but I got over it. I've been a fan of all the series and comic books for over 50 years and I thought this was an absolute refreshing take on it. Can't for the life of me understand all the complaints about technology. I hope they do more and have heard the director and writer signed up for the sequel three days before this one opened.

Saw it a couple of nights ago, and cannot say that I enjoyed it. I've never been a fan of Superman though.

I've read online that if this film does good, then Warners will definitely go through with a Justice League film. If they do , just have the following characters in it ;

Superman - Tom Welling
Batman - Christian Bale but, do away with the Black Rubber armor look and go with the grey and Black outfit as he is portrayed in the comic books.
Green Lantern - Not Ryan Reynolds. Maybe James Marsden ?
The Flash - Ryan Gosling .
Wonder Woman - Meghan Fox
Aquaman - Brad Pitt
Martian Manhunter - Vin Diesel

There, with the 7 original members of the JLA up against the menace of say, Darkseid who would be portrayed by Dwayne " The Rock " Johnson , this would be a guaranteed box office hit .

I've met a couple of casting directors during my days looking for acting gigs and mostly ending up as an extra, lol. and as a casting director TG based on your above cast, you would make a good guitar player, no offense Bro.

I am a good guitar player . LOL! Seriously though ,IMO I think if Warners does go through with a JLA film I could see Tom Welling as Superman. After all, he did play the role on Smallville for 10 years. But now that I look at my choice for Batman , I'm thinking of Stephen Moyer instead of Christian Bale. I do stand by my choice of James Marsden as GL. IMO, Ryan Reynolds sucked as GL . Ryan Gosling as Barry Allen / The Flash is a no brainer. If not Brad Pitt as Aquaman, who would you suggest ? The same with Wonder Woman . Vin Diesel is still my choice for the Martian Manhunter though. He's bald, and has the physique as well for the role. Let's see your choices then for the Justice league.

If we were following the early character as written, he'd still be 'leaping tall buildings at a single bound', in that he was not originally written to fly. On perusing a really fine coffee table book on Superman art, the illustrator, citing the exaggerated physical appearance, indicated that he did not draw Superman to appear particularly human because Kal-El was not. The comic book character has gone from appearing as an adult male in his forties, to a more youthful character, and has changed his dress style according to the times. Nor are there any longer telephone booths in which to change clothes. Hollywood creativity, tweaking our imaginations with cutting edge technology, yielding escapist entertainment is what we are about. The TV series, and the new film, looking at the life of the orphaned Kal-El, in what is for him, despite his gifts, a hostile environment, is an interesting point of view, beyond the the rather simplistic comic book hero I recall from my 'yute'. As popular culture, society, and life in general has become more complex, so has the Man of Steel.

Thankyou Doc, a wonderful explanation!

ZZDoc , I started reading comic books in 1966 with the debut of the Batman TV show. I was only 6 years old and when that debuted, I asked my mom who Batman was and she said he came from a comic book. I asked her what a comic book was and the very next day, she took me to the local drug store where there stood a rack emblazoned with copies of both Marvel and DC comics which at the time, were only 12 cents . Needless to say, I was in awe at the assortment and variety of these 4 color heroes and from there, I was hooked and knew I wanted to be one of the people who " Drew the funny books " ,which is how we put it as kids . Flash forward to 2011 when DC Comics announced that Jim Lee and Dan Didio were to be the co-publishers of the now DC Entertainment. Their first act was to put out a mini series called the " New 52 " which erased over 75 years of history and continuity that DC Comics had established and basically restart a new DC universe. As a result of this , most of our childhood heroes had gotten revamps of their origins along with new costumes and Superman was no exception. Gone were the red trunks and his suit is now what appears to be some sort of armor. This is stupid IMO. He's Superman. WTF does he need armor for ?

Now exactly what would a garment created by an extraterrestrial civilization look like? Not something of Earth, I would expect. I'm nearly twenty years your senior in the comics and scific department. You have to think out of the box on this stuff. Under a yellow sun, he's deemed indestructable. In the presence of kryptonite, he is not, and his garments might just be that....armor. You can play with this a gazillion ways and, for years, the publishers, and artists did that very thing...and are doing it again.
