Very cool and suitable gift for a musician-kudos to your wife for being on your wavelength. These Tascam Portastudios are excellent and handy bits of gear to have.
What's great about these little gems is that you can lay down song ideas when they come to you and add the other tracks when you have the time to do so.Enjoy your cool new toy.

Still trying to figure it out but so far I already know how to record a track and save it.

Good deal! I'm still using a Portastudio 424 (yeah, yeah-one of these days I'll join the 21st Century :P ) for ideas, but the damned thing quit working on me the other day, just when I wanted to record.

There are a few in amazon.com for $250 or so. The recording quality with the condenser microphone is pretty damn good!

Yes, it is. The problem I was having is the tape kept stopping when I was listening to playback. I hadn't messed with it in awhile beforehand, so who know what's up. I haven't had the chance to mess with it yet.

Okay, you've got the low end covered, now it's time to work on balance!

Yeah the guitars are pretty lost in the mix. The drummer keeps telling us (me mostly) that we're too loud. All you hear is drums and bass. We new to tighten up too, but this is just our second time rehearsing. Give us a few months. :)

Nice gift! I gather that your wife supports your musical endeavors.

That's two gifts!
